Happy New Year
5! ... 4! ... 3! ... 2! ... Happy New Year! There's no place we'd rather ring in the new year than right here in the City of Weston. In 2023, we marked new milestones, finished exciting new projects, and welcomed new small businesses into our community. We took steps to building a safer, greener and healthier Weston last year and look forward to building on our progress in the coming year.

Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy 2024.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
While marching in support of integrated schools in 1959, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."

Those words, etched now in history on the north wall of the Dr. King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C., remind us at the City of Weston of our ultimate commitment, to make your hometown a finer city to live in.

We hope everyone has a moment to pause and reflect on the words and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 15.
Residential Christmas Tree Collection
Are you ready to dispose of your live Christmas tree? Households with residential curbside garbage collection can place their tree curbside through January 13, 2024. There are just a few simple rules to follow for smooth pickup and disposal.
Chip-A-Tree at Broward Parks
Looking to give your Christmas tree another purpose? Recycle your tree at Broward County’s annual Chip-a-Tree program at Markham Park, 16001 W. State Road 84 and other parks throughout Broward County through Monday, January 16. Broward County residents can bring in a limit of two trees per vehicle and the trees will be chipped and used for landscaping throughout the County.
KidCare Expanded and Costs Lowered
Thanks to legislation introduced by Weston resident, State Representative Robin Bartleman, the income eligibility limit for the subsidized Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage, has gone from 200% to 300% of the federal poverty level or from $60,000 to $90,000 annually for a family of four. Also, new premium (cost) tiers will make it more affordable, currently as low as $15-$20 a month. Parents will no longer have to choose between a pay raise or losing affordable health care for their children.
Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday
Monday, January 1 through Sunday, January 14, 2024
Who doesn’t like saving money? If you were going to make a purchase anyway, this is the time to do it. During the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, certain clothing, footwear, and accessories under $100 are tax-free. Certain school supplies $50 or less, learning aids and puzzles $30 or less, and personal computers and accessories $1500 or less are exempt from sales tax.
Cart It!
Recycling and Garbage Items Belong in the Cart
Place all packaging materials – such as boxes and containers – into your carts or they will not be collected. The truck automatically picks up the carts without human assistance and curbside items cannot be handled by the automated truck. Be sure to “cart your cardboard!” Break the boxes down and place them in the cart to be recycled.
Reminder: Do not place recyclables in plastic bags as they are not recyclable. Put recycling items loose into the blue cart.
Foreign Film Series
After the Wedding (Denmark)
This popular series of five international movies over the course of five months is hosting its third movie on January 8. Showtimes are 4:45PM and 7:30PM at the AMC Weston 8 Cinema. Series purchases have ended but Single tickets are available at the door for $10 pending availability. Doors open 30 minutes before showing. All movies are in their original language with English subtitles.

"Move Over" Law Expands in the New Year
The current “Move Over” law states that drivers must move over a lane for stopped emergency, sanitation, utility service and construction vehicles. If you can’t move over, slow down to 20 miles lower than the posted speed limit. However, starting January 1, drivers must also move over when disabled vehicles have stopped and display warning lights, hazardous lights, emergency flares or posting emergency signage, or when people are visible. Violations will carry a fine of up to $158 for a non-criminal traffic infraction.
