Toy Drive for Harvest Drive
Donate Items through December 14
With one act of kindness, just one simple item, you can make a world of difference in a family’s life. Harvest Drive is looking for new toys or gently used, clean, and working toys. Most of us have something in our home to give. Families are referred to Harvest Drive by school guidance counselors as families in need. They are also in need of boys clothing, all sizes, new or used. Drop off at Weston City Hall, 17200 Royal Palm Blvd. There is a bin out front, or you can bring items inside during office hours. Donation deadline is December 14.
Weston University
A Rainy Day with Parks, Landscaping and Public Works
The gloomy weather did not stop the Weston University students from learning about three essential departments and their operations: Landscaping, Parks and Recreation and Public Works. In the morning, students learned:

  • The intricacies of tree pruning of the 41,000+ trees in City parks and rights-of-way
  • The fertilization and irrigation system throughout Weston
  • The complex planning process for community special events
  • The vast number of people it takes to keep City athletic fields in top shape and ready for every game and event.

In the afternoon, the students learned more about the City’s conservation efforts, stormwater management, GIS mapping and more from various engineers and professionals from the Public Works Department.

What to Expect During Heavy Rain
During heavy rainfall, like the estimated 10 inches that we received last Wednesday, the City’s stormwater management system goes into overdrive to prevent flooding to homes and businesses. Knowing what to expect during periods of heavy rainfall can help you stay prepared throughout the year.

Some standing water is normal and expected after rain. Excess water may collect in lakes, ponds, swales and streets until the water is able to drain out. This keeps the flood water away from your home. Every neighborhood drains differently, but all areas in Weston drain to one of two areas – to the C-11 canal to the south, or the North New River Canal north of State Road 84 to the north – if either waterbody is already high, it will take longer for the localized flooding to subside.

Be sure to keep catch basins near your home clean throughout the year to prevent localized flooding in your neighborhood.  Remember: ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN.

Online Holiday Shopping Safety Tips
Gift giving season is right around the corner with Black Friday and Cyber Monday kicking it all off this week. While many are looking for the best deals online, it is important to be aware that cyber criminals will be hard at work targeting online shoppers. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has provided three easy tips to make online shopping this season a lot safer.
Florida Sales Tax Holiday through June 2024
ENERGY STAR Appliances, Gas Stoves, and Home Hardening
The shopping season is here so why not save some money while doing so. ENERGY STAR appliances, such as washing machines, clothes dryers, water heaters, and refrigerators or refrigerators and freezer combo, gas stoves and home hardening impact resistant doors, windows and garage doors, are tax free through June 2024. Click below to view a list of qualifying items and requirements.
Fire Extinguishers Do Not Last Forever
Discard Used or Expired Fire Extinguishers at Household Hazardous Waste Event
The fire extinguishers that you buy for your home, garage or apartment are considered disposable (non-rechargeable) and should be replaced every 10-12 years, assuming it does not have corrosion or damage, in which case it should be replaced at that time. The manufacturing date is usually stamped on the body to help determine when it is due for replacement. The last thing you want is to depend on this valuable asset in an emergency situation and to have it not operable. Ensure fire extinguishers remain ready for use.

To properly dispose of a used or expired fire extinguisher, they can be brought to Weston’s Household Hazardous Waste Events. The next one is coming up on January 7, 2024.
