| | Though Jesus was a devout Jew who practiced his faith, he was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners—the religiously nonobservant. Jesus criticizes the self-righteous and reminds us that mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices. God continues to be made known in those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman. As we gather each Lord’s day we receive the healing that makes us well and sends us forth to be signs of God’s mercy for the world. | | | |

Metropolitan Chicago Synod Assembly
We Have a New Bishop!

The Metropolitan Chicago Synod is delighted to announce that the Rev. Erik Christensen, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Evanston, has been elected the seventh bishop of the synod. Bishop-elect Christensen will begin his six-year term Sept. 1, 2026. Installation of Bishop-elect Christensen is Saturday, Sept. 19th. Immanuel members Pr. Mark, Laura McDaniel and Chris Djuric are pictured with the new bishop.
Bishop-elect Christensen graduated from Macalester College (‘95), Candler School of Theology at Emory University (‘02), and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (‘04). He was ordained extra ordinem in 2006 and received onto the roster of the ELCA in 2010. Prior to his call at Trinity, Bishop-elect Christensen served as Pastor to the Community and Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square in Chicago.
Bishop-elect Christensen lives in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago with his husband Kerry Jenkins. “Thank you so much, everyone, for the trust that you have placed in me,” said Bishop-elect Christensen during his remarks after the election, “All that I know is God does not call us without equipping us… I am praying, and I know that you are praying with me, that God will equip all of us together to rise to the challenge of becoming the church that God’s mission needs.”

Emanuel Nine, martyrs, died 2015

On June 17, 2015, Clementa C. Pinckney, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Lee Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson were murdered by a self-professed white supremacist while they were gathered for Bible study and prayer at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (often referred to as Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina.
Pastors Pinckney and Simmons were both graduates of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. A resolution to commemorate June 17 as a day of repentance for the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine was adopted by the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on August 8, 2019.
Conngregations of the ELCA are encouraged to reaffirm their commitment to repenting of the sins of racism and white supremacy which continue to plague this church, to venerate the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine, and to mark this day of penitence with study and prayer.

Serve Boldly Youth Ministries Return to Lodge at Immanuel

As a reminder, youth and staff from the Serve Boldly youth ministries/Water's Edge Ministires will be lodging at Immanuel in two separate sessions and using Fellowship Hall, the Kitchen, and the downstairs community and Sunday School rooms. Council has granted SB majority use of the church while they stay. During these periods, Immanuel members and friends are asked to not enter the building -- unless specific permission has been granted previously. An ABBA Candlelight Experience in Evanston, IL

Immanuel is hosting a special performance by Lumos Experiences musicians on Friday, July 10, 2026, in the sanctuary. There will be two concerts, one beginning at 7:00 pm and the second one at 9:00 pm.
