"Faith That Feeds"
We believe that faith should feed and nurture our spirits.
We believe also that faith should lead us to feed people
in the many different ways they hunger,
both physically and spiritually.

Hybrid Sunday Worship

The First Sunday in Lent

March 9, 2025

These forty days called Lent are like no other. It is our opportune time to return to the God who rescues, to receive the gifts of God’s grace, to believe with the heart and confess with the mouth the wonder of God’s love in Jesus, and to resist temptation at every turn. This is no small pilgrimage on which we have just embarked. It is a struggle Jesus knew. It is a struggle Jesus shares. The nearness of the Lord, in bread and wine, water and word, will uphold and sustain us.

Feeding Our Faith

Sundays, 9 am - 10 am

Gatherings include viewing short videos and lively discussions. You can participate either in-person or via Zoom.

March 9, 2025 – Dietrich Bonhoeffer, A Story of Courage and Faith

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian, is a Christian hero for many. Executed by the Nazis just days before the end of WWII for his participation in a plot to assassinate Hitler, Bonhoeffer is hailed as a 20th-century martyr. But Bonhoeffer struggled with a moral dilemma – his religious views were in stark contrast to the evil he saw all around him.

He chose to face possible imprisonment and execution and to remain faithful to the principles of his belief in God. Across the political and theological spectrum, Bonhoeffer is celebrated as an icon of true Christianity and his theological writings are classics throughout the Christian world.

Special Events Weekend

Centuries of Sackbut Concert

Saturday, March 15, 2025, 3:00 pm

Immanuel Sanctuary

The Ravenswood Trombone Quartet will perform on Sat. March 15, 2025 at 3:00 pm with a medley of pieces from ancient to contemporary. The concert, titled Centuries of Sackbut ("sackbut" is an ancient word for an early form of the trombone) features selections by Franz Joseph Haydn, Caterina Assandra, Felix Mendelssohn, and Melba Liston, among others.

Formed in 2024, the Ravenswood Trombone Quartet represents some of Chicago's busiest trombone performers and educators. Hailing from as close as Belmont and Ashland to as far as Atlanta, Georgia, they explore the 500-year history of their instrument with curiosity and creativity.

Please invite your family and friends to this rare opportunity to hear a local talented ensemble. Admission is free. (You'll see a familiar face as Catie Hickey has performed previously at Immanuel as a guest musician for several special worship services.)

Blessing of the Quilts

Sunday, March 16, 2025, 10:30 am

Special Public Viewing: Saturday, March 15th during the Indoor Farmers' Market in the Immanuel Sanctuary

Please join us during worship service on Sun. Mar. 16th for the blessing of the over 225 quilts which have been carefully and lovingly sewn over the past year for Lutheran World Relief. Pr. Mark will confer a special blessing before the quilts are packed up for shipment. All quilters, families and supporters are invited!

There will be a public viewing in the sancutary the previous day, Sat. Mar. 15th during the Indoor Farmers' Market (8:00 am - 12:30 pm). The quilts will need to be gathered up in preparation for the Ravenswood Trombone Quartet concert at 3:00 pm. If you're able to help out with the quilts after the market, please see Chris Djuric or Bert Mount. Likewise, help is needed on Sunday morning before worship to place the quilts back for the blessing. Thank you in advance for your support of this important ministry!

War in Ukraine: Three Years Later

Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes to seek safety in neighboring countries — and been welcomed by Lutheran Disaster Response’s partners in the region. Even as the situation evolves, the impact of this conflict on people’s lives continues. Your extraordinary generosity gave Lutheran Disaster Response the opportunity to immediately accompany our neighbors in Central and Eastern Europe and to continue to walk with them through recovery and healing.

“You brought the sunshine back.”

During a missile strike in Kharkiv, a woman’s windows and the outside wall of her apartment were severely damaged. With assistance from Lutheran Disaster Response, the wall was repaired and a new window was installed. Looking out through the window in her kitchen, she said with a smile, “Look, you brought the sunshine back.” Click on the photo to read the story in Lifelines.
