Dear St. Alphonsus Families,
Happy Spring! Everyone is certainly loving the warmer weather and sunshine these days!
Some reminders for you this week!
Although the weather is sunny and warm, please remember that our dress code does not allow for shorts and skorts until April 1. Skirts still need to have tights or leggings under them as well. You can always check what our dress code is for things like this by visiting our website here!
Pizza lunch order forms went home last week and they are due TOMORROW! Check out the details about this below. Also be reminded that we have our big field trip to St. Thomas More High School this week for the performance of Wizard of Oz. ALL students will need a cold lunch and beverage on Thursday, March 13 as there will be no hot lunch service that day.
Today is the last day of the second trimester, and report cards will be released on Friday at 3:00pm. You can find instructions on how to access your child's report card below.
The application period for St. Gerard Scholarships is now open! Families with students in grades 2-8 are eligible to apply, and you could win up to $800 towards your tuition. Find more details about this below.
The Book Fair is this week! Mrs. Schermetzler has included a lot of information for you below; please be sure to read thoroughly and reach out with questions.
Don't forget that tonight is the last all-school Home & School meeting of the year! Join us at 6:00pm in the Community Room. Have you been looking for more ways to get involved? This is your chance to come learn about all the events Home & School puts on and step in where you can. As a bonus, anyone who attends receives an out-of-uniform pass for their students.
Lastly, in case you missed Father Kevin's letter last week, we have hired a new principal! You can learn more about her here, but we are so excited that she is going to attend the State of the School presentation next week so she can start to meet all of you. You can find more details about State of the School, including a link to submit your questions, below. Please note that because we are serving alcohol, children may not attend. We hope to see many of you there!
Have a great week!
Best regards,
Ms. Parey, Principal
Mrs. Schermetzler & Mrs. Bruhn, Leadership Team

Report Cards Will Be Released Friday!
Don't forget that report cards will be released at the end of the school day on Friday. To check your student's grades, follow these instructions:
- Click on Grades & Attendance on the left hand side.
-
Select the Standards Grades tab on this screen.
- Click each Course on this window and the Standards grades should open up. You can also select Expand All in the upper right hand corner to expand all courses at once.
Per the Milwaukee Archdiocese, we use a Standards-Based Grading method here at St. Alphonsus School. Here are what the standards mean:
-
1: This really only applies to students who demonstrate no knowledge of the standard. The student may be able to complete an assignment but only with assistance.
-
2: The student isn't at mastery level but is learning the needed vocabulary and learning targets shown in the scoring guide. They stay at this level until they have shown full mastery of the standard being assessed. The student shows a partial understanding and is able to complete an assignment without assistance.
-
3: The student has shown proficiency on the standard. Students may need more than one opportunity to demonstrate mastery of a standard. The student's understanding is demonstrated consistently and work is completed independently.
-
4: The student has shown and applied the knowledge beyond what is expected at a given grade level. The student independently completes self-directed studies. It is high on Bloom's taxonomy level, beyond what has been taught in the classroom, something most students don't obtain, and is usually due to a combination of high ability, high interest, and/or high background knowledge.
If you have questions about accessing report cards, please email Mrs. Schermetzler. If you have questions or concerns about your student's standards-based grades, please contact their teacher directly to discuss.

Middle School History Buffs
Our Middle School Social Studies Program continues to Impress!
Recently, our 7th graders shared their WWII history projects with the whole school! Each student chose a part of the war to explain in the form of a 1940's radio broadcast. In the 1940s, families would sit around the radio and listen to broadcasts for hours about the war. The project goal was for students to put themselves in the shoes of a broadcaster, and deliver news about their topic of the war. They even used lingo from the 1940's like "henfruit" (eggs), and "clams" (money). They dressed the part and had a mock microphone to help sell their broadcast, and visited all the classes in our school!
| |
And Congratulations to 6th Grade History Buffs who qualified for the Great History Challenge Regional Competition at St. John's Academy!
The regional competition took place last week, and Ella, Mila, Caleb, Henry, Matthew, Moises, Nicolas, and Luka all did St. Alphonsus proud in the competition! Luka won a Top 4 Finisher spot for 6th grade and Ella, Caleb, Henry, Matthew, Moises, and Luka all qualified for the National Championship in Orlando. Great job to everyone; we are so proud of all of you!

Middle School Box City is Coming Soon!
Box City will take place from Saturday, April 12 into Palm Sunday. This is a unique service project opportunity for students in grades 5-8.
Students will sleep outside, in boxes, in an attempt to live just a fraction of the unhoused experience. They will then go to Mass together in the morning and participate in the Palm Sunday Pack the Church at 7:00am Mass as lectors and gift bearers.
Parent volunteers are needed for this event! Middle school parents, you can sign up for shifts here.

Scholastic Book Fair Updates
The Book Fair is Here!
This year, we are heading back to Scholastic. You will be able to shop online and students will be able to shop at the fair during specific times throughout the school day this week. The shopping time are listed below. In addition, the Book Fair will be open to the public to shop after all weekend Masses on the weekend of March 15 & 16!
There is a lot of information to share with you about the Book Fair, so please read this through thoroughly!
Students will be PREVIEWING the Book Fair on the following days:
Monday, March 10
1:00pm 6th Grade
1:30pm 5th Grade
2:00pm 7th Grade
Tuesday, March 11
8:00am 3rd Grade
8:30am 2nd Grade
9:00am 5K
10:00am 4th Grade
10:30am 1st Grade
11:00am 8th Grade
Students will be SHOPPING the Book Fair on the following days:
Tuesday, March 11
12:30pm 5th Grade
1:20pm 6th Grade
Wednesday, March 12
1:00pm 3rd Grade
1:30pm 4th Grade
Friday, March 13
8:00am 7th & 8th Grades
10:00am 2nd Grade
10:30am 1st Grade
11:00am 5K
Our 3K & 4K Classes are invited to preview and shop the fair with their parents or another family member, in one session. Their preview/shopping time is 2:00 to 3:00pm on Thursday, March 13. Those who are shopping should check in at the school office and meet your student at the classroom. The classes will walk down to the fair together. Early Childhood parents, if you cannot attend to shop with your child at that time, please don't worry! A wishlist will be made with your child & sent home for review. Mrs. Schermetzler will then fill your child's order to the best of her abilities on Friday.
Students can make purchases of their books in 3 ways:
- e-Wallet, which works like an online gift card
- Cash
- Check
e-Wallets are the preferred and easiest method for students to shop. Please see the guide attached below for more information about this. Mrs. Schermetzler also keeps a list of e-Wallets and barcodes at the register and updates this each day. During the weekend or if you are volunteering in person during the week, we can also take credit card. Please do NOT send credit cards with your student to purchase during the school week.
Please note that Wisconsin sales tax rates MUST BE included when figuring out how much your student needs to bring for the Book Fair. The Book Fair will charge 5.9% sales tax on all purchases, so please figure this into the calculations for your student's purchases. This is also why I recommend using the online option! This is the easiest way to have your child shop at our fair and ensures that even if a certain book is not available or you have not done the necessary tax figures, your child can still easily purchase books at the fair.
Please remember that the Book Fair is NOT a bookstore with unlimited inventory. Please note that we have limited quantities of books and I am unable to guarantee that your child will be able to get everything on their wishlist. In the event that a book is sold out, we will do our best to help your child select an alternative book in the same price range, OR, you may use any remaining e-Wallet funds to order the book online through our online fair. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE CHECKS FOR EXACT TOTALS, as I cannot guarantee that your child will get their exact order. But! Books ordered online during our fair still count towards our school and can ensure that your child gets exactly what you want. Some books available online are not available in our in-person store either, so you also get a wide selection. Book fair replenishment is subject to what is available in the warehouse, so if you want to guarantee your child gets a specific book, please order it online.
Lastly, just a point of note: 3K & 4K Families are the only families invited to shop in-person with their students during the school day. If you would like to shop in-person with your student, you may do so on the weekend after all weekend Masses. And if you're there to do that, why not consider volunteering? I could use some more help on Saturday and Sunday when parishioners shop. You can sign up here.
Please let Mrs. Schermetzler know if you have any questions! Thank you again for your support of this year's Book Fair.
