8th Grade Graduates were surprised by teachers and staff at their homes yesterday
Principal's Letter
Dear OLG Families,

In this short week we have been busy making plans for June activities that complete our school year. Next week holds several exciting events including 8th grade Graduation. Graduates and families, special emails/links are coming separately. It's easy for all of us to take part with the streaming of the Light of Leadership Mass at 10am, June 3rd, and graduation later in the day. See the calendar and more by reading on....

And don't forget the parish is inviting all to send a family picture in (with names) so we can "fill our pews" in the church for masses. More details of it all here and here. Pentecost is this Sunday, May 31st, so remember to wear red (even if you're just watching at home).
Friday June 5th is our final "OLG Spirit Day" of this school year and there is a special contest happening... more details below! The final week of school usually has class parties and a lot of wrap-up activities. This year each day will have a little theme and special fun. Be on the lookout for more ideas to come as we wind-up our academics this year.

For end-of-year returns of borrowed computers, library books, CYO uniforms, and more, please plan on either the afternoon of Friday, June 12th, or slots on Monday, June 15th. Signup here to help spread our selves throughout and maintain social distancing as best we can.

As for next Fall, we are not alone in our uncertainties and are planning as best we can. I do have two more staffing changes to make you aware of as Loretta Kramer, our longtime OLG Librarian and Kindergarten teacher has officially decided to retire and Kysa Sedivy, our beloved 3rd grade teacher, is also departing from our school at the end of the year due to family, finance, and bridge considerations. We will miss both of these beloved teachers next year. On the hiring front I am happy to announce Danielle Kolding, our long term sub for Kindergarten, has happily accepted the position for Kindergarten next year! Other hires continue to progress. There is movement afoot at the state and county levels as well regarding Fall and in what fashion we are able to open school. I'll have more information next week to share with you. Stay tuned each week as more info comes forward!

Finally, there is some great news being shared across the Archdiocese about some amazing Guadalupans! See below regarding our "Battle of the Books" contestants and Mrs. Sommerville's awesome work with them! Also, Ms. Hobbs and our 7th graders each year experience service-in-action in a special way around the community, something we call Missionary Discipleship. They are recognized this year in a wonderful article published by NW Catholic magazine. I'm so proud of all our students and the service work our school and parish does throughout the community. #OLGStrong
Yours in Christ,

Anton Kramer

2020 Battle of the Book Competition Finals!
2 nd  Place! Wow – great job ladies. On May 27 th  the OLG Bulldog’s middle school team: Rebecca T. Kaley M, and Kelsey O. battled against other middle school teams for the archdiocese championship title. “Mostly, I miss my friends…”
Even though we’ve been on this COVID road together for a number of months, our thinking and behaviors still have to readjust to new guidelines and demands from time to time. But one aspect remains constant and frustrating in the midst of this pandemic - distancing from friends. Not having the ease, the frequency and the routine of interacting with friends can bring on stress. A young child’s response is often anger and irritability. When stressed, “regressions” are normal (acting younger than one’s age)... Continue Reading

How to Participate in Live Streaming Masses with Children
Great Tips from a Parish Family
Create a mass kit that can include: a cross, candles, bells (to ring with the Gloria), plate, cup, bible, “altar” cloth, activity sheets for children during the homily (sent by parish or accessed on website), and a copy of the Spiritual Communion Prayer. Your children can also include other items such as stuffed animals to be part of the “assembly”. And don’t forget that you can pause the live streaming at any time to engage the family in a particular way, such as encouraging everyone to write down on a slip of paper what they are sorry for  (Penitential Rite)  or who they want to pray for  (General Intercessions) , set up the kid’s activities for the homily so that the adults can listen to Fr. Kevin, and process through the house before mass begins with the candles, etc. Be creative and let your children help create the kit, which can be put in a bag or box.

Update on Installing our New Camera System in Church
We are still waiting for our new camera system to arrive. Most of the wiring is completed so that when it arrives it can be installed in a few hours. Keep those prayers coming.
LAST Chance to Sign up for the Youth Migrant Project
The Youth Migrant Project mission trip for teens (graduating 8 th graders through graduating seniors) is moving ahead! We are accepting applications and preparing for service in the Skagit Valley from August 10-14. Come learn about migrant life by visiting the camps, working in the fields, and distributing food at the Tri-Parish Food Bank. We will join with youth from St. Anne, St. James and St. George. We will continually monitor health advice as we proceed. If the full program isn’t possible, we hope to find ways to assist essential farmworkers and their families as they labor to put food on our tables!  Applications are due by Sunday, May 31.   Email Jennifer for more information.

How to Not Use Plastic Bags for Shopping!
The use of plastic has significantly increased during this pandemic, which is still dangerous for environment. Consider using a rolling cart when going into the store and put all your groceries back into the cart at checkout. Take the cart to your car and load them into your reusable bags in the parking lot. So simple, right? Also, don’t forget to recycle plastic bags at Safeway or Home Depot

OLG is Collecting Masks
Catholic Community Services is in urgent need of thousands of masks for their frontline workers. They are also trying to equip farmworkers with masks as the harvesting seasons begin. Help the essential workers who labor to provide shelter and food for our community. We will be collecting homemade and store-bought masks. Visit https://ccsww.org/sewing-bee/ for sewing instructions and tutorials. You can drop your donations in the collection bin outside the Pastoral Center on weekdays.

SW, Burien, WA 98146. If you would like to provide a meal, please contact the Parish or School Office. Please continue to keep Bob’s family in your prayers.
