Get Ready for the Fun Run!
Dear St. Alphonsus Families,
I hope you are having a great week and enjoying these last bits of summer weather. We are certainly well into the swing of things here at school, and we are getting excited about the annual Fun Run, which kicks off this week!
The Fun Run is our biggest fundraiser and also one of our biggest events of the year. Make sure that you read all the information below and get your student signed up to help their class earn some amazing prizes and help our school earn some amazing funds! We will use the Fun Run funds this year to update some of the technology around our school. The life of a student chromebook is not long and so we will start replacing some of those as well as other technology needs!
Register your student by this week Thursday and they will get an Out of Uniform day on Monday, September 22! See more details below. If we hit our all school goal of $20,000, students will get to SLIME me! I am looking forward to it so let's hit that goal, St. Alphonsus!
Thank you in advance for your participation in the Fun Run. It truly takes every family and we are so grateful for your support! Thank you also to our awesome Fun Run Chairs, Dawn Eisold & Olivia Hartley. We know this event is going to be amazing and it's because of their leadership and hard work!
A few other short reminders this week:
-
STAR reports will be coming home with students this week! If you have questions about your student's test results, please reach out to their homeroom teacher directly.
-
Please save the date for Grandparents Day! Grandparents and Grandfriends are invited to join us on Wednesday, October 15. We will have more details & an RSVP form coming soon.
-
The St. Alphonsus Orchestra is looking for a few more members! In order to keep the orchestra program going at St. Alphonsus this year, we need a few more students who are interested in joining. Mrs. Schermetzler has also decided to learn the violin alongside the students this year, so it's truly a unique & fun time to join! Please check out information from GO MKE here. The deadlines listed are passed, but you can reach out directly to Mrs. S who will point you in the right direction to sign up. Orchestra is available to students in Grades 3rd through 8th.
This newsletter is our number one communication tool to you as parents. We ask that you please read it thoroughly each week. Our school website is also a great resource for you and has lots of information available under the PARENTS tab at the top of the page. You can also always find an archive of our school newsletters on our website here.
Have a great week!
Best Regards,
Megan Sagat
Principal

Battle of the Books is Back!
This is a lively academic competition that improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, introduces students to new books & authors, and teaches teamwork, commitment, & sportsmanship. The program culminates in a tournament on Wednesday, April 30, at St. Jude School in Wauwatosa, where we will compete against other area schools!
How It Works
Teams of three students each from Grades 4, 5, and 6 read 45 pre-assigned books (15 books each) from October to March. Titles are from varying genres with a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Teams will gather after school once or twice a month for practice battles and to determine St. Alphonsus School’s Tournament Champs (one team per grade level). The Tournament Champs will go to the program-wide tournament in April.
Practice Schedule
The practice schedule/time commitment is progressive. We will meet once per month until January, when we will start meeting twice per month to have practice battles.
Meetings will be held after school in the library from 3:00-3:30 on the following dates:
- October 13
- November 17
- December 15
Meetings will be held after school in the library from 3:00-4:00 on the following dates:
- January 19
- February 2 & 16
- March 2, 16 & 30
- April 20 - finalists only
Tournament
The 2025-2026 Battle of the Books tournament will be held on April 30, 2026 here at St. Jude School in Wauwatosa. More details will be provided as the date gets closer!
The permission slip and more info can be found here and students will also bring home a paper copy this week! Permission slips are due back by Tuesday, October 7.
And here is the 2025-2026 Battle of the Books Book List!
