Mrs. Sagat Says...

Get Ready for the Fun Run!

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

The school year is off to a great start! Thank you to all of our families who attended our Back to School Round-up! It was a good opportunity for our teachers to talk one on one with parents for everyone to better understand what the year holds. For anyone who was not able to attend, please know that you can always reach out directly to your child’s teacher via email should you have any questions or concerns.

Our Fun Run kicked off last week and we are already halfway to our goal! Through the generous support of our parents and the greater community, we are able to continuously offer an exceptional school experience for our students. Another huge shout out to Dawn Eisold and Olivia Hartley from our Home and School Association for their planning of this event! Keep up the amazing work everyone and I can’t wait to get “slimed” for reaching our school goal of $20,000!

A few other short reminders this week:

  • Please save the date for Grandparents Day! Grandparents and Grandfriends are invited to join us on Wednesday, October 15. We will have more details & an RSVP form next week.

  • This is the last week to sign up for some of our new extracurricular offerings! Consider signing up for Smart Start Art or Stage Stars, in addition to our very popular Chess Club. You'll find more information about all of these below, and you can follow this link to sign up.

  • Our Picture Retake Day will be next week Tuesday, September 30. Today is the last day to order the current pictures. Find more information about this below. If your student will be having a retake, please let their homeroom teacher know by this week Wednesday.

  • Our 8th Grade is hosting a food drive! They are currently reading The Hunger Games in their Literature class and have planned this service project to go with their unit. Check out the flyer below and get ready to donate items for a Pasta Dinner next week!

This newsletter is our number one communication tool to you as parents. We ask that you please read it thoroughly each week. Our school website is also a great resource for you and has lots of information available under the PARENTS tab at the top of the page. You can also always find an archive of our school newsletters on our website here.

Have a great week!

Best Regards,

Students having their picture taken may be out of uniform that day to wear their picture clothes. Any parents interested in a retake should contact their homeroom teacher by Wednesday!

Reporting Absences & Appointments

Student absences & appointments can be reported in two ways:

  • Call the office directly at 414-421-1760. Listen for the prompts and leave a message.
  • Email our Attendance Secretary.  The email address is attendance@st-alphonsus.org.

Emailing a student's homeroom teacher is NOT sufficient notice of absence or tardiness. All absences, early dismissals, or tardies need to be reported to the office. Kindly also refrain from emailing Mrs. Schermetzler your absences in lieu of contacting the Attendance Secretary; thank you!

Battle of the Books Is Back for Grades 4, 5 & 6!

Battle of the Books is Back!

This is a lively academic competition that improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, introduces students to new books & authors, and teaches teamwork, commitment, & sportsmanship. The program culminates in a tournament on Wednesday, April 30, at St. Jude School in Wauwatosa, where we will compete against other area schools!

How It Works

Teams of three students each from Grades 4, 5, and 6 read 45 pre-assigned books (15 books each) from October to March. Titles are from varying genres with a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Teams will gather after school once or twice a month for practice battles and to determine St. Alphonsus School’s Tournament Champs (one team per grade level). The Tournament Champs will go to the program-wide tournament in April.

Practice Schedule

The practice schedule/time commitment is progressive. We will meet once per month until January, when we will start meeting twice per month to have practice battles.

Meetings will be held after school in the library from 3:00-3:30 on the following dates:

  • October 13
  • November 17
  • December 15

Meetings will be held after school in the library from 3:00-4:00 on the following dates:

  • January 19
  • February 2 & 16
  • March 2, 16 & 30
  • April 20 - finalists only

Tournament

The 2025-2026 Battle of the Books tournament will be held on April 30, 2026 here at St. Jude School in Wauwatosa. More details will be provided as the date gets closer!

The permission slip and more info can be found here and students also brought home a paper copy last week! Permission slips are due back by Tuesday, October 7.

And here is the 2025-2026 Battle of the Books Book List!
