The Modelling & Projections Programme | First Virtual LEAP Training Course

On the 12th of August 2022, the MRV Hub Modelling and Projections Programme (MPP) held the closing ceremony for its inaugural Virtual Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP) Training Course. The ceremony culminated the ten (10) weeklong training course focused on building regional capacity in the use of the LEAP modelling software. The LEAP modelling software has been used by many MRV Hub member countries in the revision of their National Determined Contributions (NDC) and development of their Mitigation Assessments as part of their Biennial Update Reports (BUR).

Representatives from countries across the region embraced the opportunity to learn from some of the MRV Hub’s modelling experts. A total of nineteen (19) participants from ten (10) countries participated in this training. Seventy per cent (70%) of the registered participants obtained some level of certification in the course, of which a staggering seventy (70%) were female participants. This level of female participation in the modelling training was yet another highlight of the training course.

Climate Week 2022

The 2022 Latin America and the Caribbean Climate week (LACCW 2022) was hosted by the Government of the Dominican Republic and took place 18-22 July in Santo Domingo. The event was organized by UN Climate Change in collaboration with global partners UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme and the World Bank Group.

Partners in the region included the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC), the CAF–Development Bank of Latin America, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The week of forums, workshops, discussions, and presentations allowed stakeholders from varying government institutions and organizations across the Latin American Caribbean community to exchange ideas, success stories, and lessons learned. The theme of LACCW2022 events provided opportunities to discuss climate actions towards; resilience against climate risks; the transition to a low-emission economy and partnerships to solve pressing challenges, within both a regional and global context. The event also served the greater purpose of creating a platform that encouraged pertinent and crucial regional discussions ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 being held in @ in November.

As part of the Climate Week activities, the MRV Hub held a side event discussing “The role of regional cooperation in improving MRV systems and NDC reporting”. Drawing on work in several Caribbean countries, the event explored the linkages between transparency and MRV systems. A panel of representatives from Caribbean Cooperative MRV Hub member countries shared their experiences.

MRV Hub Summer Academy 2022

Since its inception in July 2020, the MRV Hub Summer Academy training program has maintained a virtual format to accommodate the many challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic; while still empowering new MRV Hub Member country staff in the greenhouse gas management field.

The third annual MRV Hub Summer Academy took place 16th August to 30th September 2022. Each of the 12 MRV Hub member countries was invited to nominate 2 participants to attend the virtual training program tailored to build the GHG accounting capacity of entry-level personnel within ministries responsible for the environment and climate. This year’s cohort included over 25 experts from MRV Hub member countries and organizational partners.

MRV Hub instructors led trainings in greenhouse gas inventory development cycle, data collection, emissions estimations, quality control & quality assurance, and tools and resources to support inventory work. This year’s academy also included guest lecturers from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) who delivered special topic sessions on planning tools and carbon markets.

MRV Hub at COP27

The MRV Hub will participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) which will take place from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt as an extension of support to our membership delegations and partners.

COP27 will offer an important opportunity for all Parties to scale up commitments to deliver on the Paris Agreement and Glasgow Climate Pact.

Join us on November 11 at our joint side event with the Government of Grenada on “Cooperative Regional Hubs for Climate MRV” where we explain how smaller countries can improve their Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) success through regionally cooperative models.

The MRV Hub is thrilled to announce the launch of our new website!

On the 1st of September 2022, the MRV Hub launched its official website at www.mrvhub.org. This website launch is in line with the goals of MRV Hub, in providing a one-stop virtual space to communicate our work in the region.

The site features information on the MRV Hub and on the broader MRV context, current, and upcoming programs and services offered, a news and events calendar section, and a glimpse of the team working with the MRV Hub. The site will make keeping track of events easier and will provide an additional avenue to support the needs of current and future member states. We hope to continue building the site to include other features that will support our member countries even further.

The feedback from the team has been overwhelmingly positive therefore the MRV Hub now invites visitors to explore the new website. Check out our updated list of programs and services as well as our events calendar. Feel free to drop us a line by contacting any one of our team members or through the contact us form on the site. We’d be happy to hear from you about meeting the needs of the region.
