Mrs. Schermetzler Says...

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

We are LEANING IN to Spring! The beautiful weather today has certainly made coming back to school after a restful Spring Break so much easier! I hope you all get a chance to get outside this week and enjoy some warmth.

We are in the final push of the school year now--hard to believe! I do have a few things to update you on this week:

First, please note that starting today, Monday, April 13, the gates in the back courtyard parking lot will be closed during the school day, from about 8:00am to 2:00pm. We have noticed a very large increase in cross traffic from the neighborhood as people cut through the lots and do not maintain safe speeds, and in an effort to keep everyone safe, Father Kevin has elected to start closing these gates during the school day going forward. This means that if you need to come to the school office during the school day, you will need to enter the backlot from Churchway; OR, you may enter from Loomis and then park near the parish house or parish offices and walk across to pass the gates. When lining up for carline in the afternoon, the gates will not be open for you until 2:00pm, so you may line up behind the gate until it is opened. Thank you for your cooperation!

We are still waiting for a few families to return their re-enrollment forms & fees. This helps us to plan for next year, holds your student's spots, and the $75 fee per FAMILY is credited to your tuition next year. You can find a copy of the form here.

Our next round of student lectors is the weekend at the 4:30pm Mass, Saturday, April 18! I could still use 1-2 more lectors and another gift bearer. If you plan to attend Mass anyway, why not have your student participate? Find more information below and you can sign up here.

Our 5K Daisy Troop is hosting a Hygiene Drive to benefit the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry! The class who brings in the most items will win a pizza party! Find more details below.

The Kids Heart Challenge is also coming up again soon. Mr. Gutche hosts this for us (you may remember this as Jump Rope For Heart when you were a kid), so be sure to stay tuned for more information. You can check out some save the date details below.

Lastly, just another reminder from me about the Parish Auction, which is coming up quick! We are still selling Raffle Calendars for this event, and we can still take donation items until this Friday, April 17. Find more details about this below.

The Parish & Community News section of the newsletter is packed this week with various things going on at our area high schools, and in the parish and community. Be sure to read all the way to the end!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything: aschermetzler@st-alphonsus.org. Email is a much faster way to get me, as I am not often near my desk these days to answer the phone.

I hope you all had a wonderful break, and welcome back to the end of the school year!

Other Important Reminders

Playground Safety Reminders for After School

As the weather gets nicer (hopefully!), we always enjoy seeing families playing at the school playground after school! This is a great way for parents to socialize and kids to get more energy out before heading home for the day.

We have two safety reminders for you as we head into Playground Season:

1) NEW THIS YEAR: If you plan to visit the school playground after school, please park at the back of the playground towards the apartments. Do not park close to the playground, gates, or in the middle of the lot. This will allow our Cougar Club Staff to be able to come out and set up their cones without needing to wait for cars to move, so that the Cougar Club kiddos can get some outside time too.

2) If you plan to stay at the playground after our Cougar Club staff and students have arrived, please note that YOU as the parent are responsible for your child's safety and behavior on the playground. Cougar Club staff are there to watch students attending our after school program. If your child is not attending Cougar Club, please be sure you are addressing your own child's safety & behavior on the playground. Thank you for your cooperation on this!

The Parish Auction is Friday, April 24!

The Parish Auction is Coming Up Fast! Key Dates & Information You Should Know:

We are still accepting basket donations and gift cards to be used in our Silent Auction, on the "gift card wall" and more. All donations must be received by Friday, April 17.

In Addition, Student Volunteers Are Also Needed!

This is a great way for kids to perform some community service, saves St. Al's the money we'd otherwise have to pay for adult waitstaff, and is a lot of fun!

Students should arrive at 4:30pm and will be done between 9:30pm and 10:00pm. Students will assist with table and other set up. They will serve appetizers to guests during cocktail hour. After that, they will work in the dining area, clearing salad plates, serving entrees, bringing coffee carafes to the tables and clearing plates, glasses, silverware, etc. at the end of the meal.

We will feed students dinner shortly after arrival. Students should wear a plain, white shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt with comfortable, closed toe shoes.

Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to serve. High schoolers are also welcome. Sign up here!

Lastly, we are still selling Raffle Calendars!

$25 each and only 600 sold. We will only be selling these until the night of the auction, so get them before they're gone.

You have many chances to win $9,000 in prizes and you do NOT need to be present at the auction to win, as the winning goes all year! Stop by the parish auction table in the gathering space after weekend Masses to pick one up, or stop into the parish or school offices as well. This is a great way for you to support the auction even if you are not attending!
