Jazz Band Field Trip

This spring break, TJ Jazz Band took a journey through the evolution of jazz & blues music and the civil rights movement. Students traveled to New Orleans, where they played a free concert on the Mississippi River and went to the World War II Museum. Memphis was the next stop, where they visited Graceland and the Civil Rights Museum. The trip ended in Chicago, where they gave another performance at the Field Museum and saw an amazing live show at a jazz club downtown. Chaperones Robin Morrissey, Fred Allen, Andre Moss, and Emily Lupo, agreed that it was a very memorable experience for all. Thank you to Robin Morrissey for planning this unforgettable adventure for our TJ students!

PTO News

PTO Awards over $20,000 in grants to the school

At last week’s meeting, the PTO considered the 28 grant requests (totaling $41,000) submitted by TJ staff to the Spartan Grants program. We were able to fund 21 of the requests, totaling $21,645. More news on the grants awarded will appear in a future newsletter. The money for these grants comes from the TJ Auction, which opened last night. We have a goal to raise $20,000 this year, so please register for the auction, bid early and often! There is also a spot to make a straight donation, which is 100% tax deductible and potentially eligible for a corporate match if your employer provides this opportunity. More information on the auction is in this newsletter. And THANK YOU to auction chairs, Megan Perkins and Becca Mahoney and all of the parents who helped secure donations.

Staff Appreciation Week needs your support!

Our Staff Appreciation committee showers our teachers and staff throughout the year with appreciation events. This includes holiday

and Valentine’s gifts, staff lunches 2-3 times per year and a week of Staff Appreciation events each May. With over 150 employees to reward, our annual expenses are about $6,000, but to date, we’ve only received around $1250 in donations.

Our staff are grateful and so appreciative of these efforts. Many remark that TJ has the best PTO and parents in the district!

The PTO is currently making plans for next month’s Staff Appreciation Week - May 1-5. Each day our teachers and staff will get a special treat or gift, facilitated by the parent committee for one of the classes.

How can you help? We’ll handle all of the plans and legwork, but please consider making a

tax-deductible donation to the fund online here. And if this is your passion, let us know and we’ll

add you to the committee for next year’s efforts. email: http://TJHSpto@gmail.com

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips

Did You Know...?

(En Español

Earth Day, April 22nd, is almost here! Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world that focuses on environmental protection. What we love about this day is that in addition to us getting outdoors and enjoying where we live, we can learn about small and easy steps we can take every day to positively impact our environment.

Some facts:

  1. Americans use 380 BILLION plastic bags used each year. Our use of plastic bags annually requires 12 MILLION barrels of oil
  2. Annually, Americans throw away 34 MILLION TONS of paper
  3. In one day, each person creates approximately 4 POUNDS of trash

What are some small changes I can make right now?

  1. Carry reusable bags that are washable and able to be condensed easily so you can carry them in your car, purse or pocket! Before you use a plastic bag, think, “does this really need to be in a bag?” or “can I put this in a Tupperware?” Aim to use glass containers, as they are better for the environment and usually BPA free.
  2. Think twice about printing that email or document, and remember to recycle all paper! Thinking about all those unwanted catalogs you get? Consider canceling unwanted catalogs through this website: www.catalogchoice.org
  3. Remember to recycle as much as possible. Find out where you can recycle ANYTHING at

https://search.earth911.com/

Test your knowledge! Take a quiz!
