January 2021 - March 2021
I love to watch the little flowers and the baby animals come to life! Spring is a renewal of life. In our work, we get to see this renewal of life in the women we serve. I have continued to watch the staff grow and use their skills and abilities to thrive during this time. I am beyond blessed to have been a part of this with them. I want to send them and all who have helped us to remain intact, a ginormous hug and thank you!
For each of you I pray; may you stay safe, may you stay healthy and may you stay positive.Come to our Virtual Tea Party for Mother’s Day on May 8, 2021! To help us with our mission with a recurring and/or one-time donation, please visit our website at www.recoveryhouseofhope.org

Looking Back
Part Eight
.By Dot Reed, SHOH Past President
If you are reading this Newsletter, then you probably have read many others in the past.We have had several Editors over the years. All of whom provided information about SHOH, such as activities, celebrations, clients and staff.
I believe it started with Mary Jane Huling as “New Beginnings”.1991-2001. In those days we had to have it copied, printed, stapled, folded, addressed, stamped and mailed. Yes, snail mail! Remember that? I sure do!
The next editor was Cynthia “Oma” Gray from 2001 until 2005.In 2006 Judy Wehrli produced the newsletter until 2009.Then in 2009 Doris Churry designed the heading we now use with the butterflies and daisies. Doris continued as Editor until 2012. In 2012 we hired a Marketing Coordinator, Juanita Hernandez, who also did a great job until 2014 when she turned it over to Monica Little. Monica continued until 2019.Our current Editor is Oma again, and we are very happy that she stepped up until we find another Marketing Coordinator .

SOROPTIMIST HOUSE OF HOPE, INC.
COVID-19 STATEMENT
March 17, 2020
Soroptimist House of Hope (SHOH) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our clients, staff and the community in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Due to the critical and potentially life-saving nature of our mission to help women with substance use disorders, we will continue to conduct our residential treatment programs at our Treatment Center in Desert Hot Springs and our Transitional Recovery Residence in Banning.
SHOH is following all guidance provided by the Centers of Disease Control, California Department of Health Care Services, and Riverside University Health Center (County of Riverside Departments of Behavioral and Public Health) in maintaining the health and safety of our clients, staff, and the community. Our clients and staff have been directed to practice social distancing techniques whenever possible as well as enhanced personal hygiene and self-care. Frequent and thorough cleaning procedures have been implemented at our facilities. We are screening all staff and clients for symptoms of COVID-19 on a daily basis, limiting group activities within the Treatment Center and Transitional Recovery Residence, suspending all off-site 12-Step meetings, volunteer, and social activities, prohibiting non-essential visitors, and facilitating immediate medical care for anyone displaying symptoms.
We are confident that these practices will keep our clients and staff healthy while we provide our valuable services to women in need. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at houseohope2@aol.com or by phone at 951-849-9491.
Please take care and stay safe. Thank you for your support.

Despite the challenges of the past year, SHOH has been fortunate to receive pandemic-related funding to assist our ability to help our clients achieve sobriety, good health, and self-sufficiency. We obtained two Payroll Protection Program (PPP) Loans totaling $151,482 which were utilized to maintain our staff and will be fully forgiven by the federal government. In addition, we secured a Small Business Relief Grant of $15,000 from the State of California, a Business Assistance Grant of $10,000 from the County of Riverside, a Nonprofit Assistance Fund Grant of $10,000 from the Inland Empire Community Foundation, $9,054 from the CARES Act Healthcare Provider Relief Fund, and $5,000 from the Desert Healthcare District/Regional Access Project Foundation COVID-19 Recovery Fund. We were also awarded $15,000 from the Regional Access Project Foundation and $10,000 from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for our direct program services. These generous grants, along with donations from our supporters, have ensured our financial sustainability during the pandemic. Thank you for your generosity!
Soroptimist House of Hope relies on the generosity of charitable foundations to provide grants that strengthen our ability to help women overcome substance use disorders. As of March 31, 2021, we have received $207,636.00 for fiscal year 2020-2021. We are honored to collaborate with our foundation partners to meet our shared goals, and we extend our sincere thanks to all of our supporters! With substance use disorders rapidly increasing due to the social isolation and economic instability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, SHOH is committed to maintaining our services during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and need.

Dear Soroptimist Sisters,
I can’t thank you enough. I am in awe that a group of women have initiated and maintained continuity here at this wonderful place. I came here full of fear. I have been to rehabs before with poor results. They were much larger, understaffed and could be scary. This house doesn’t feel like a rehab. It is an individualized program with so much love and warmth. Not one staff member ever made me feel like I was bothering them. And, though I had an assigned counselor, who is wonderful, every single staff member was sensitive to my needs and took the time with me, dropping what they were doing and reminding me that I am worth being here, respected and answered with love. May God Bless You, this house and everyone that works here. D.B.
Hi, I would just like to say how grateful I am for House of Hope and Founders. Thank you Soroptimist for this chance to change my life around. If is wasn’t for this home and staff’s help, I believe I wouldn’t be clean and sober today. I’m blessed that I ended up here. I’m blessed that I got to forgive myself and others. Today, I no longer have to live with my wall up. I don’t have to worry of where I’ll spend the night next or if I’ll eat or not. I now know there is help out there. I no longer have to get loaded to avoid problems and pain. What I have to do today is keep connected with my sponsor, meetings and checking in with House of Hope. Work the program honestly and apply today and in my future what I’ve learned here. Make my bed every morning; eat as a family, keeping things clean and organized, staying connected with sisters in Recovery and going to as many meeting as I can. But more than anything, staying clean and sober. This place has taught me so much that I don’t have enough words to explain it. All I can do is show with actions how much I’m grateful for what you’ve done for me, all the support I got here, the help from each and every one of the staff members. Thank you. K.P.

Dear Soroptimist,
I want to start by saying I was nervous when I came here. Until I looked up the meaning of the word Soroptimist on dictionary.com and found out that it means “best for women”. Then I got here an instantly fell in love with the kind, generous and truly loving staff. In my opinion, this really is the best program for women with substance abuse issues. In this program, I have learned that I no longer have to let my usage and past addiction problems run my life today for that I am very grateful. This program has also taught me coping skills and how to forgive myself and love the wonderful woman I am inside and out. None of that would be possible without the amazing, wonderful women who work here: Dot, Cindi, Arla, Kirby, Alexia, Christine, Lupe, Elizabeth Rebecca and our alumni. None of it would have ben possible for me. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you! My life is better now and I owe it all to you wonderful ladies. I love each and every one of you. I will never forget you guys or what you guys taught me. I love you. Sincerely, L.I.
Dear Soroptimist,
I want to thank you for supporting House of Hope. I cannot express to you how relieved I felt walking through that front door. I am an addict but I’m also a mother, a daughter and an employee. Before coming here, I was in active addiction and in despair. I’d lost custody of my kids and I was on the verge of losing my job and the roof over my heard. I was alone and desperate for help. Coming here was like coming home. Here I was fed and given a safe place to rest. I was no longer alone. The staff here has been warm, welcoming, understanding and supportive. They’ve shared their experience, strength, and hope with us women. They have educated us on the disease of addiction as well as teaching us coping skills and life skills that I believe will help me get through the hard times that life sometimes throws our way. You have something very special here and I have been fortunate for this experience. I was here for the holidays and we were blessed with so many thoughtful gifts. But the biggest blessing is House of Hope and the Soroptimists and the best gift was Recovery. Sincerely, Y.R.
