It is hard to believe we are already in the 2nd Quarter of 2022. Most real estate professionals are reporting being very busy right now due to strong market activity, but we hope that will not deter you from participating in some of the upcoming education and social activities that the Chapter is holding in the months ahead. We have some exciting things coming up and, as always, the only place to view a list of all the chapter’s activities in one place is our local chapter website: www.almschapter.org.

In national news just last week, Appraisal Institute President Jody Bishop, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, CRE, testified before the House Committee on Financial Services addressing concerns on appraisal bias among other topics. For those interested, the links to his oral statement and written testimony can be found below.

Our educational offerings continue to help us grow as a chapter, and we are committed to providing the best education to our members.

We are excited to welcome back instructors, Ted Whitmer, MAI, AI-GRS, CRE, CCIM and Leslie Sellers, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, who are both recognized nationally as being first in class educators in the appraisal profession.

Don't miss Ted Whitmer's 7 hour Staying Out of Trouble Seminar being held via ZOOM on May 3rd, 2022. It is a great chance to catch up on your CE as well as learn some invaluable lessons on what not to do!

We will be offering Fundamentals of Separating Real, Personal, and Intangible Business Assets on May 19th -20th at Rosewood Hall in downtown Homewood, AL.  As this is our and in-person class, we will also be holding an "After Hours" event immediately after day 1 of this course on May 19th from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Soho Social, located adjacent to the classroom venue. We are so looking forward to the return of these post-education social events that were so successful pre-COVID.

I am also looking forward to seeing everyone in Biloxi, MS June 10 & 11th for the in-person classroom offering - Inconsistency: It's Hiding in Plain Sight in your Appraisal. We will again hold an AI After Hours Social on the Harrah’s pool deck. Please come take advantage of this opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and network with other real estate professionals.

We also would like to thank Cushman & Wakefield, Colliers, Premier Appraisals & Valbridge for serving as sponsors for the summer meeting in Biloxi. There is still *time to become a Silver, Bronze, or Friends Level sponsor. Please consider this as it is a great opportunity to support the chapter - whether you are able to attend this in-person event, or not.

Since 1969, LDAC has served as a leadership and programming development for appraisers who are dedicated to the appraisal profession to formulate solutions to problems and challenges faced by the appraisal industry. Held annually in Washington, DC, LDAC also provides an opportunity for appraisers to meet with members of Congress regarding current issues facing the appraisal profession. We are excited to announce that we will be sending five representatives from our chapter to the Leadership Development & Advisory Council (LDAC) in May 2022. Our representatives are as follows:

  • Christopher Alan Pettey, Jr., MAI

On Friday, March 31, 2022, The Appraisal Foundation announced the Board of Trustees voted to reinstate the Appraisal Institute as an Appraisal Sponsor of The Appraisal Foundation.

“I am pleased the Appraisal Institute is rejoining The Appraisal Foundation as a Sponsor,” said The Appraisal Foundation President Dave Bunton. “Our organizations share a commitment to protecting the public trust in the appraisal profession, and I look forward to our renewed partnership. BACKGROUND: The Appraisal Foundation is congressionally-authorized to set standards and qualifications for real estate appraisers. It is governed by a Board of Trustees which oversees two additional boards, the Appraisal Standards Board and the Appraiser Qualifications Board, responsible for writing the standards and qualifications respectively.
