Periodically, we highlight someone successfully self-directing their services with
The Arc, and this time, we are highlighting Mat!
Mat has been active in Self-Directed Services since 2008. Over the years, he has watched the service model evolve and gain popularity. Mat feels this has been a positive change with more people being made aware of the impact Self-Directed Services can have and that “it’s no longer obscure.”
During Mat’s tenure in Self-Directed Services, he has honed his skills as an employer and credits his Support Broker with helping him manage his employees. He has been able to retain staff for more than 8 years and believes that offering a flexible work schedule and building rapport is key. Mat feels one of the major benefits to self-direction is having the ability to train employees to fit the employer’s needs.
Mat’s tips for new Participants coming into self-direction include joining local advocacy groups and hiring a Support Broker that is well versed in the program. Mat advises that the responsibility of a self-directed employer should not be taken lightly, and a Support Broker can show new Participants the ropes.
Mat is passionate about advocating for the community and promoting Self-Directed Services at a legislative level. He is the Executive Director of People On the Go, an organization that provides advocacy training and other supports. He encourages all Participants to receive training as advocates to ensure they are effective in getting their message heard.
The Arc is currently seeking Participants to be featured in our May 2025 newsletter!
