Dear Friends,
One Easter weekend when our children and their cousins were much younger my Mom and Dad hosted an Easter egg hunt on their farm. Rather than collect as many little eggs as they could find, the grandchildren had to find the one large egg that had their name on it. Nearly everyone had found their egg, except for one of my nephews. I could see that he was getting frustrated, so attempting to be a helpful aunt, I offered a big hint about the egg’s location. That was the wrong thing to do! My nephew wanted to find his Easter egg BY HIMSELF. I had messed that up!
Of course, we depend on God for life and grace and mercy. There are times when we must depend on other people. Scripture teaches that we are to depend on each other, “to bear one another’s burdens.”
However, like my nephew reminded me, it’s important that we do some things by ourselves. I believe one of the things we need to do for ourselves is pay attention to the story of Jesus’ last days during Holy Week. We might walk beside each other on the journey, but no one can make the journey for you.
Even though it’s last minute, I invite you to consider taking part in the Maundy Thursday dinner service this evening. If you can’t attend the service, I can send you the script for the service to use at your dinner table at home on Thursday or Friday. If you can’t attend the service on Thursday, consider finding a Good Friday service in the community. Whether or not you attend a worship service during Holy Week, I invite you to read and reflect the story of Jesus’ passion in one of the gospels. (John 13 on Thursday and John 18 and 19 on Friday and Saturday).
I hope you will take the time to walk with Jesus during Holy Week. As you do, may you experience the power of God’s love for you.
God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Kim
