Chair's Corner

Today I want to talk about the Republican and corporate mindset. Last week, the CEO of Walmart said that prices are going up weekly and they will for the rest of the year. Then he said, but it really only affects middle- and lower-income people. This mindset is Republicanism 101. As long as the super-rich, especially people who inherited their money, are safe then that’s all that matters.

And now this new policy even has a name: “sneakflation.” We all know corporations aren’t going to be absorbing the costs of tariffs, because they only care about making money, so what they’ll do is slowly but surely pass the costs of tariffs along to the consumers. Especially middle- and lower-income Americans like most of us. Within the next two years, experts say we will absorb anywhere from 67-100% of the tariff hikes. And who can afford this? The wealthy. Who can’t? Those who have to decide between buying roast beef or bologna, multigrain or white bread, and those who have to tell their kids they need to keep wearing hand-me- downs.

And no state practices this mindset better than Ohio. But don’t worry, after 30 years of Republican rule in Ohio, there’s only three states, THREE, who have higher unemployment than we do. Job well done Republicans.
