Hi there!

It's time for Week 3 of the Summer Share. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Chicken 101 class last night-- it was a blast! We had a packed house, and Parker was pulling out all the stops. Congrats to those of you who carved your first chickens!  Our next class will be a Grilling & BBQ class in early July-- announcement and registration will come out soon.

Here is a quick note from Trevor about last week's "Strawberry Disappearance":

" This year's strawberry season has been a challenge.  We started picking our berries on May 13 at Wholesome Valley.  So did many other "plasticulture" growers.  The early berries were great, although not plentiful, but they also ended early.  Last week with day time temperatures in the low 60s and overnights dipping into the mid 40s, strawberries were few and far between.

We are sorry for the inconvenience of some days not having enough berries. We sadly don't know what we are getting until we show up to get them. To get you fresh berries, we must get them daily.

Thursday and Friday were the toughest days last week.  Some growers picked on Wednesday, but not much else ripened between  Thursday and Friday. Our days were hectic-- calling drivers in for extra hours to run here and there for 50 to 100 quarts of berries. On Friday alone, Kevin stopped at 7 growers in the Homerville area in the morning, Mike stopped at 3 in Middlefield, and I stopped in southern Wayne County. That afternoon we had to send Kevin back to Homerville for Friday day pickings.  Friday night, Connor then had to visit our Middlefield growers after the evening stops. He got back to the warehouse at 10:30 pm. Then Saturday morning at 6 AM we were back on the road to Homerville again!

This week the warm temperatures should help us, but we are basically at the end of strawberry season.  For those stops where berries did not make it back in time before the trucks left, such as Hudson, we'll be sending berries this week.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and dedication to delicious, local foods!"

"Biodiversity can be applied to both produce production and animal production, or a mixture. It’s a rather broad term that essential means that a healthy ecosystem is created using complimentary plants, animals, and processes that help build fertile, organic soils, reduce or eliminate the need for pesticides, and produce nutrient dense foods...."

You'll all be getting a fiesta bag this week, perfect for burrito bowls or taco night: zucchini, cauliflower, black beans, corn chips, lettuce and either spinach or Swiss chard (depending on availability-- will be listed at stop.) The Omnivores will be getting some of our spicy Pork Chorizo-- it's bursting with flavor and makes for perfect quesadillas, nachos, or try one of our most popular recipes, Chorizo Taco Soup (especially good for some of you Winter Share members who might still have, ahem, some corn in the freezer!!)

The Vegetarians & Vegans will get a bunch of beets and some strawberries in their shares, and the Large subscribers will get some yellow squash, a quart of our fermented Sauerkraut, and a Boston Butt Pork Roast (Large Vegetarians will get some salsa and pasta instead.)

REMINDERS
Schedule your vacation by Saturday at midnight the week before you leave.

We need a little notice if you're not going to be picking up your share any given week, so vacations must be registered by Saturday before the Share Week you're planning on taking off. You can take off 4 total share weeks over the course of the season.

So if you're going out of town for the week of the 4th of July (Week 6), you need to schedule that by Saturday, July 1st.

  • Sign into your account and click "Manage My Subscriptions."
  • Click on the "Vacations" tab, & add the weeks you'll be out. Repeat for multiple weeks.
  • You can also reply to this email, give us a call 800-861-8582, or tell a Greeter at the stop.

You'll get your bag's value as credit in your account when you return. Depending on your subscription, that's $25-$27 for a Small Share or $40-$43 for a Large Share.  You can spend that credit on extras (either Special Order or at the back of the truck,) but you can't use them to pay off a previous balance or make a subscription payment. Vacation credits diminish by half after four weeks, so spend them within the month of your return!

Tell your friends and neighbors-- you can join anytime and we will pro-rate your share for the remaining weeks.

We will keep taking members at any point throughout the Summer as long as there is still room in the program. Sometimes, we'll even have people join up for just the last few weeks!

Tell your friends and neighbors who are late to the party that it's not too late-- just give us a call or forward them this email and we'll be happy to help them sign up for a pro-rated share.

2.5# Pork Neck Bones for $1

Wholesome Valley Farm's  Raw Sauerkraut

We have a raw, fermented Sauerkraut made with just Organic Green Cabbage & Pink Himalayan Salt. It has never been frozen or subjected to the high-heat required for canning (you'll notice that the button on the lid is popped-- that's normal), so the kraut is still "alive":  enzymes are converting the sugars from the cabbage into lactic acid to preserve it. These good bacteria are incredibly healthy for your digestive track, and it's delicious to boot.

Like any raw food, Kraut should be stored in the refrigerator (for up to 3 months with no reduction in quality.) There will likely be some pressure from the gas release in fermentation, so occasionally open the lid to release it. The Large Share subscribers will each be getting a quart, but if you're a Small Share subscriber and you want to try it out, we've listed the extras for sale!

$7 per quart
