Scrubs and Surgical Nursing

Earlier this month, 33 students donned hospital scrubs and learned about surgical nursing and the thousands of instruments used during operations. It was part of a "Peri-operative Nursing and more" field trip to John Muir Hospital organized by our College and Career office. Students had a hands-on opportunity to drill into fake bones and see the metal components used in orthopedic surgery. Students were also introduced to and tried out the two million dollar Da Vinci surgery robot and learned of this cutting edge field. Most importantly, they engaged with surgery nurses and the Zimmer Biomet personnel who shared what they do on a daily basis and their academic journey to achieve their present positions. Carondelet's Annual Advent Project

Our annual Advent Project will begin on Monday, Dec. 2. Each year we choose local organizations to support during the season of Advent by collecting items they need. This is part of our on-going mission to help the dear neighborhood by assessing and responding to the needs of our community.

This year we will support Friendly Manor in Oakland. This drop-in center for homeless women was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph and offers a safe and supportive environment where women experiencing homelessness can eat, do laundry, and shower.

Each class will be collecting different items for a Friendly Manor:

Freshman - Sports bras and deodorant
Sophomores - socks and twin bed sheets
Juniors - pillowcases and pillows
Seniors - washcloths or hand towels and pads and tampons

All items can be delivered in the Inner Court by Friday, December 13. Thanks for your support of the Advent Project and contact  Natalie Terry  if you have any questions.
Model United Nations Club attends both Stanford and DVC conferences in November

Model UN at Stanford
Carondelet students attended two Model United Nations Conferences this past month. These conferences attract high school students nationwide to participate in simulations of the actual United Nations. Carondelet students step into the shoes of ambassadors from member states to resolve global issues through debate and negotiation. Our students spent November 8-10 as delegates at the Stanford Model United Nations Conference at Stanford University. Nicole Abudayeh earned a Verbal Commendation Award for her role as Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes during a crisis simulation of the Truman 1945 Cabinet. Best Delegate, the most prestigious Model United Nations award, was earned by Laura Bocek and Eva Eleftheriadis for representing Estonia in the UN Legal Committee.

Nicole Abudayeh reflected on her experience at Stanford: " I loved being at Stanford for a weekend to be able to explore the beautiful campus and to represent the Secretary of the Interior in Truman's Cabinet. It's safe to say that this year's Stanford Conference was the best Model UN experience I have ever had, and I highly encourage it for any student at Carondelet."

Model UN at DVC
Delegates from Carondelet also participated in the Contra Costa County Model United Nations at Diablo Valley College during November 16-17, where our students represented Russia, Israel, Honduras, and Tanzania. Both Laura Bocek and Lucie Labrecque won the Outstanding Delegate Award for their role as Russian delegates in the UN Security Council. All together, Carondelet students tied for the award of Best Small Delegation.

"Model UN is an amazing experience that has influenced me in many aspects of my life. It provides an avenue for me to learn about world issues. Additionally, Model UN assists us in growing in our public speaking, negotiation, and communication skills. The experience of working with peers on current impactful world issues is irreplaceable and priceless." - Eva Eleftheriadis '20

If you have any questions about participating in Model United Nations, then please contact our MUN Club Moderator, Phil Miller, at pmiller@carondeleths.org.
College & Career Counseling for Freshman

On Thursday and Friday this week, the College & Career Counselors are meeting with freshmen during their Big History classes. The purpose of the sessions is fourfold: to better acquaint students with their college counselors (assigned by alphabet), to explore the course catalog and 4-year plan, to introduce Naviance , our online college and career platform, and to complete an exploratory career inventory. The career exploration and subsequent self-discovery are meant to offer students clues to their innate abilities and to expand the possibilities of future paths. The results of each student's Career Interest Profiler and corresponding assignment will provide the counselors with valuable information that will be used during the academic advising process next semester.

Ask your daughter to share her results (and her Holland Code) with you! Students' career exploration assignments are due December 13.

Lauren Rivera '21 Presents at FARE

Lauren Rivera '21 presented at the FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) National Conference in Washington DC for a second year. She is a member of the FARE Teen Advisory Group and led another project this past summer. The goal of the project was to identify the best tasting, food allergy friendly snacks on the market, from a unique teen perspective.

Lauren stated, "It can be challenging to find granola bars/snacks that are both food-allergy safe AND taste good. Fortunately, more companies are getting into this market. I organized a Teen Taste Test Panel, where I reached out to companies that produce food allergy-friendly granola bars/snacks, requested free samples, followed up on many of the companies, sent the samples out to my team members who are located across the US, set up an online survey to collect the reviews, ran the taste test, and then summarized the results."
