Dear Partners,
This month, we at CSN are excited to begin the first year of our new cooperative agreement, awarded to Education Development Center (EDC) by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). We will continue to provide training and technical assistance and resources on infant, child, and adolescent injury and violence prevention to state and jurisdiction health departments and health and safety services and systems, continue leading the Children's Safety Now Alliance (CSN-A), and launch a new learning collaborative later this year.
Last month was National Water Safety Month, with May 15th being International Water Safety Day. Drowning remains the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of unintentional death among those ages 5-14 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2020). Rates of drowning deaths are higher for boys, Black and American Indian/Alaska Native children, and children and adolescents who live in non-metro areas (CDC WISQARS 2018-2021).
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement, drowning prevention requires a multilayered approach that includes the following practices:
- Remove water from tubs, buckets, and kiddie pools after use and store them upside down
- Surround pools with a four feet high, four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates
- Teach children and adolescents basic swimming skills, including floating and moving through the water
- Supervise children and teens when in and around water—supervision must be close, constant, and attentive
Drowning prevention resources from CSN, its partners, and other sources are shared in the next section of this newsletter, followed by other resources on child safety issues. The Surgeon General's important new report, "Social Media and Youth Mental Health," is also highlighted in blue in the Resources section below. Resources from our CSN-A partners are highlighted in purple.
Please widely share these resources with your networks.
Kindly,
Jennifer Leonardo
