Administrator's Corner

February 12, 2024

Dear Parents,

As we are six weeks into the semester, please make sure that you are sitting with your students and checking their grades in Parent Portal. You can see their missing work in Schoology as well. Encourage your students to attend Office Hours on Monday and Friday from 3:35pm - 3:55pm. This is their opportunity to connect with teachers and get their missing work done. Please remember that Saturday School should be utilized after students attend Office Hours at the recommendation of the teacher.

On Thursday of this week, we will have our Honor Roll Assembly at 3:10pm celebrating students and their achievements for the first semester. The Honor Roll will be followed by our Smarty Party in the cafeteria. (Assembly Schedule)

Estimados padres,

Senior Sophia Zizzo was named the CHSCA 4A Diver of the Year at the State Championship meet!

The award recognizes her performance, positive attitude and sportsmanship. She finished 19th in the state, with a career high score.

TJ’s Diving Coach, Kevin Sage, was named Coach of the Year, for his work coaching athletes from TJ, North, South, and East High Schools. Sage’s DPS teams sent 10 divers to the State Championships in the 3A, 4A and 5A divisions last week.

  • Thomas Jefferson High School celebrated National Signing Day last week. Congrats to the many Spartan athletes who were honored! We're excited that you are taking your skills to the next level!

On Thursday, February 1 TJ hosted community organizations Juntos and Convivir to help students who are immigrants understand pathways to financial stability, no matter their status. They did classroom presentations all day long and did a lunch panel with translation in Spanish, Farsi, Arabic, Pashto, and Swahili. Over 100 students were able to learn about career pathways and opportunities. We look forward to more collaboration with these two wonderful organizations.

Challenge Day

TJHS is excited to announce that Thomas Jefferson High School will be providing CHALLENGE DAY to our Junior class. It will be a one day event broken down by alpha on February 13th and 14th.

  • Feb 13th-Juniors with last names beginning with A-L will attend
  • Feb 14th-Juniors with last names beginning with M-Z will attend

There is also a $20 participation fee to help offset the cost of the workshop which includes professional facilitators. Lunch will be provided. Please log into my school bucks for payment of fee. If you need assistance, please email Sdavis@dpsk12.net

What is Challenge Day?

Imagine a school where everyone feels safe, loved and celebrated. Imagine enemies finding common ground and making peace; friends healing past hurts and making amends; people igniting their passion for service and leadership; adults and youth working together to create a school where everyone is included and thrives. The program addresses issues such as self-esteem, bullying, oppression, violence, etc. It is a cultural building opportunity that creates change makers. This is Challenge Day.

If you are curious of what challenge day looks like you can YouTube it. It premiered on MTV, Chicken Soup for The Souls and OPRAH. Here is a great glimpse at what challenge day does for the community:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdwcJrDDhQ4

Every Junior is asked to participate. Please click on the link and let us know if you're opting out your student:  Opt Out Form

If your student opts out, the expectation is that they will be in school participating in their regular schedule.

PTO News

Thank you to all who attended last week’s PTO meeting. Minutes and financials are posted here.

What if nobody was running for President? The PTO is faced with this exact dilemma. If you read this newsletter weekly, you have seen our “help wanted ads.” With graduation 3 months away, the future of our TJHS Partners PTO - which has been around since the 1960s - is uncertain. We will need a President and Vice President or co-Presidents to share the workload. Interested in keeping this school support organization alive? Or in renovating it for the future? Email TJHSpto@gmail.com and we can talk over coffee. No previous PTO experience is necessary, just a willingness to serve!

Student Exchange Program - Still Need Host Families!

We are currently in need of additional 3 host families for 3 female students participating in an exchange program from Chiben Gogo in Japan.

The students will be living with and attending school with students here at TJ. They will attend each of their classes but they will have their own work provided from their schools in Japan. These students study English in Japan so, although they are not fluent in English, they have the tools to communicate in the language. They simply need practice and exposure. The students will be with us from March 6th through March 24th when they will return to Japan together. Of the remaining students, there are 8 girls and 1 boy in need of a host.

If you are interested and able, please contact Mr. Jackson at kjackso@dpsk12.net for more information. This is a tremendous opportunity because it opens the doors for our students from TJ to travel to Japan and be hosted with families there as well.

Upcoming Webinar

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips

Did You Know...?

(en español)

There are some quick easy things you can do if you are feeling stuck, or need new ideas in solving a problem.

Change Environments! A disruption in your everyday life may provide the force needed to alter the direction of your thinking. For some people, small changes might help (reorganizing your desk or taking a new route to work), whereas for others, more upheaval (a new job) is required.

Look as if You’ve Never Seen: Try approaching situations (even routine ones) as if you were encountering them for the first time; “beginner’s mind” allows you to remain open to new experiences despite any expertise you may have. For example, when you  are brushing your teeth, take a moment to look at the toothbrush as if you’ve never laid eyes on it- observe its color, shape, size.

Viva la Difference: The mere presence of individuals from different backgrounds with different points of view in your everyday life creates an atmosphere in which people can better respond to change.

Shift into Positivity: Unlike negative emotions that trigger specific reactions, positive emotions prompt us to broaden our attention, explore our environment, and open ourselves to absorbing new information. Take a few moments to think about the things in your life that are going well and for which you are grateful; this will automatically brighten your mood, AND free your brain!
