Welcome to our Self-Directed Services monthly newsletter, where we share updates, reminders, and helpful information to support you in self-directing your services.

Your Services, Your Story

Periodically, we highlight someone successfully self-directing their services with

The Arc, and this time, we are highlighting Corey!

Corey has been self-directing her services for three years and is very happy with her choice. Corey’s favorite thing about self-directing her services is having “employer authority.” For example, she was able to hire her mom as an employee and is thrilled to spend more time with her. Corey’s family feels that Self-Direction is a truly person-centered approach to providing the flexibility for Corey to engage in activities she enjoys, including traveling and trips to Starbucks.

Corey has been able to hire people close to her, creating continuity of services. Corey’s employees are aware of her likes and dislikes and work with her schedule. Because of her relationships with her reliable employees, Corey is able to travel as she desires and frequently visits with family.

Corey credits her Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) as someone who has been instrumental in helping her access Self-Directed Services. The team’s advice for participants wanting to come into the program is “do it!” Corey’s journey has created an environment where she is the sole focus of her team, and she is able to be a part of her community with a purpose. Corey feels that coming into Self-Directed Services was the best decision she ever made.

Forms & Resources

Day-to-Day Administrative Services

As someone who self-directs their services, you have the option to use cost savings to hire someone for Day-to-Day Administrative Services.

To request this service, include it in your annual or revised Person-Centered Plan, documenting how it supports an outcome in your plan. Your CCS will assist you in this process. Please note that Day-to-Day Administrative Services will not continue if your plan enters auto-extend.

Additionally, all IFDGS items - except for Recruiting and Advertising - will also stop when a plan enters auto-extend. To avoid any interruption in services, please plan ahead accordingly.

Vendor Payment Information

As outlined in the DDA’s Self-Directed Services Manual, vendors must submit specific documentation to qualify for payment or reimbursement. For detailed requirements, please refer to Vendor Requirements and Vendor Payment Request Form on the Forms & Resources page of our website. All vendors and their invoices must comply with these requirements to be processed for payment or reimbursement.

Participant Inclusion

As a friendly reminder to all Participants, please ensure you are included or copied in all communications with The Arc. This includes emails, phone calls, tickets, and document submissions. This approach supports you as the “boss” of your services. Those with a designated representative are not required to be included in communications.

The Arc is here to assist with all your Self-Directed Services needs.

If you have questions or need assistance, our Stakeholder Relations team is available by phone 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday-Friday at 866.252.6871.
