Periodically, we highlight someone successfully self-directing their services with
The Arc, and this time, we are highlighting Corey!
Corey has been self-directing her services for three years and is very happy with her choice. Corey’s favorite thing about self-directing her services is having “employer authority.” For example, she was able to hire her mom as an employee and is thrilled to spend more time with her. Corey’s family feels that Self-Direction is a truly person-centered approach to providing the flexibility for Corey to engage in activities she enjoys, including traveling and trips to Starbucks.
Corey has been able to hire people close to her, creating continuity of services. Corey’s employees are aware of her likes and dislikes and work with her schedule. Because of her relationships with her reliable employees, Corey is able to travel as she desires and frequently visits with family.
Corey credits her Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) as someone who has been instrumental in helping her access Self-Directed Services. The team’s advice for participants wanting to come into the program is “do it!” Corey’s journey has created an environment where she is the sole focus of her team, and she is able to be a part of her community with a purpose. Corey feels that coming into Self-Directed Services was the best decision she ever made.
