Dear Partners,
February features awareness events addressing two important child safety topics: burn injuries and teen dating violence.
National Burn Awareness Week takes place during the first full week of February each year, this time falling on February 4-10. Proven prevention practices that can take place in the home include properly installing and maintaining smoke alarms, having and practicing an escape plan in the event of a fire, cooking with care, and maintaining a safe hot water temperature. The following CSN resources may help state and local health departments identify additional practices that will support fire and burn safety:
February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), in 2021, 9.7% of high school students reported experiencing sexual dating violence and 8.5% reported experiencing physical dating violence in the past year. Strategies that may protect teens from dating violence include teaching them skills for healthy and safe relationships, engaging influential adults and peers to promote social norms that support healthy relationships, and creating protective environments in schools and neighborhoods (CDC, 2017). CSN resources dedicated to providing data and evidence-informed prevention practices related to teen dating violence can be found in the newsletter below.
Resources from our CSN-A partners are highlighted in purple.
Please widely share these resources with your networks.
