President's Message
|
October 2020 - December 2020
Happy New Year wishes from Soroptimist House of Hope. We all look forward to a busy and satisfying time of helping women who need our program to return healthfully to their families. This project has been successful due to our commitment to focus on a small number of women, giving them the attention and stewardship they need to see the positive path of recovery. We are so proud of and thankful for our staff and volunteers who pour their hearts into Soroptimist House of Hope. The Board of Directors will be focusing our efforts to reach out to our community for promotional marketing toward increasing awareness of SHOH here in the valley, to draw in new volunteers and to increase our fundraising abilities. If anyone is interested in helping us with these efforts please contact Executive Director Rebecca Norton or myself. We look forward to expanding our team for the good of Soroptimist House of Hope. We encourage everyone to choose positive actions and pray for assistance to achieve positive results in all endeavors of 2021.
May God bless us all.

Executive Director's Message

October 202 - December 2020
HAPPY NEW YEAR! In a world that is no longer “normal” we have not lost our hope. As each dawn appears over the horizon, I thank my God for another day. I have no idea what to think or say about all the chaos going on, but I do know one thing for sure, I get up and show up. Addiction is still out there ravaging the lives of men, women, and children. SHOH is here and will continue to offer the women of our community a reprieve from their disease. As 2020 comes to an end my intuition whispered, “This year SHOH will shine”. Many have lost hope, financial resources, and even friends and family. We must not give up or give in, life is precious. We are strong, we are invincible, we are alive, we are Americans!
Your support is deeply appreciated by our Board of Directors, our staff and the women we help recover from the ravages of addiction.
Peace and Good Health to You,
Rebecca Norton, CADC-II, ICADC
Executive Director

Marilyn Alt
Over the years we have had many dedicated members of the Board of Directors. One of them is Marilyn Alt who joined the Board in 2005. Marilyn, at that time, was a member of SI Palm Desert and encouraged other members to participate in the yearly household showers for SHOH. The most important contribution to the Board started with a chance meeting. In 2010 Marilyn was performing her civic duty as a Juror in Indio where she met Maryreed Roberts, a member of the DoyleFoundation. Maryreed asked what they could do to help SHOH. WOW, we received a grant that paid off the mortgage at our Desert Hot

|
Spring facility! Since that time, we have been the recipient of numerous grants from The Doyle Foundation. Marilyn served on the Board as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President until she and her husband, Jack, moved to Los Altos to be near family. Many thanks are due for her many years of service to SHOH.
SHOH is now in our 40th year of service and there are many other stories to tell. If you have a story to tell please let me know at dreed66133@aol.com

PREVIOUS EVENTS
OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2020
We were blessed during this holiday season and with the support of a grant we were able to provide gifts for the clients and their children in the residential facility. The residents in the Banning Recovery Residence received gifts from our friends in SI Beaumont Banning and Fran DeVry which they were extremely grateful for. The Banning house also received an 8 foot fully decorated magical Christmas tree through Ardith Turner (SI Moreno Valley) donated by The Foundation Riverside University Health Systems. The Desert Hot Springs facility received a holiday grant to provide gifts for our clients and their children as well as holiday. We had a small, COVID-19 safe gathering of staff to celebrate Christmas. Our normal 100+ Alumni party was cancelled so we were grateful to have our small gathering.

COVID-19 STATEMENT
March 17, 2020
Soroptimist House of Hope (SHOH) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our clients, staff and the community in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Due to the critical and potentially life-saving nature of our mission to help women with substance use disorders, we will continue to conduct our residential treatment programs at our Treatment Center in Desert Hot Springs and our Transitional Recovery Residence in Banning.
SHOH is following all guidance provided by the Centers of Disease Control, California Department of Health Care Services, and Riverside University Health Center (County of Riverside Departments of Behavioral and Public Health) in maintaining the health and safety of our clients, staff, and the community. Our clients and staff have been directed to practice social distancing techniques whenever possible as well as enhanced personal hygiene and self-care. Frequent and thorough cleaning procedures have been implemented at our facilities. We are screening all staff and clients for symptoms of COVID-19 on a daily basis, limiting group activities within the Treatment Center and Transitional Recovery Residence, suspending all off-site 12-Step meetings, volunteer, and social activities, prohibiting non-essential visitors, and facilitating immediate medical care for anyone displaying symptoms.
We are confident that these practices will keep our clients and staff healthy while we provide our valuable services to women in need. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at houseohope2@aol.com or by phone at 951-849-9491.
Please take care and stay safe. Thank you for your support.

Soroptimist House of Hope relies on the generosity of charitable foundations to provide grants that strengthen our ability to help women overcome substance use disorders. As of December 31, 2020 we have received $113,670 for fiscal year 2020-2021. We are honored to collaborate with our foundation partners to meet our shared goals, and we extend our sincere thanks to all of our supporters! With substance use disorders rapidly increasing due to the social isolation and economic instability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, SHOH is committed to maintaining our services during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and need. SHOH has been fortunate to secure a federal Payroll Protection Program loan of $72,516, which supported our personnel expenses and will be fully forgiven. In addition, we obtained a CARES Act Provider Relief Fund grant of $9,054 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and $10,000 from the Riverside County/Inland Empire Community Foundation Nonprofit Assistance Fund. We are also proud to announce that we recently received a $10,000 grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. These funds have enabled us to maintain our operations during the pandemic, implement rigorous safety standards to protect the health of our clients and staff, and ensure our ability to fulfill our mission to help women overcome addiction and achieve sobriety and self-sufficiency. We are profoundly grateful for the support of all of our donors!

Dear SHOH,
Thank you for opening your home to me when I had lost all hope. I was bewildered and in awe with the love and encouragement I received from the moment I entered your home. I had NEVER felt such genuine love and encouragement. I felt such a peace in your home. I was able to heal the lonely, scared little girl in me as I learned so much about myself. I found out that little girl S, was full of life. She is smart, graceful, and humorous and loves to learn and help others. Thanks to you founders, for your home of hope, staff that possess big caring, giving hearts and wisdom. May God bless you all in all areas of your life. Sincerely, S. R.
Dear SHOH,
I want to start off by saying thank you, thank you so much for this house. This house has made a change in my life. It’s opened my eyes and showed me that there is hope for an addict and it is never too late to change our lives around. I am worth it even if I have a drug problem. Being an addict is hard because I constantly got put down, got judged for my mistakes I’ve made in my addiction. Words are words, they are painful. When I came to the house, I walked in not knowing what to expect and I had my mind set on what I was going to do. I didn’t belong here and I didn’t have a problem. But as time passed and I started to work on my steps, I was able to accept that I had a problem and that I was powerless over my addiction and I couldn’t do this alone. I needed help and the staff here loved me and helped me so much. I’m blessed and grateful to be part of this amazing family. As I’m getting ready to leave out into the world, I am a bit nervous but I got my box full of tools that I didn’t have before. I have a home that I can always come back to whenever I need help. It will always be here with its door open. Today I am proud to say I am an addict, I am an addict in recovery that’s grateful and blessed. Today, I have honesty, hope, faith, courage and integrity. Something I didn’t have before I came in. I walked in with pride and denial. Now I get to walk out of here proud of myself and that’s all because of this house and the amazing, loving staff. Thank you so much for everything. I’m grateful to be a part of the House of Hope family. R.V.

Dear SHOH
I want to thank you for giving me a new life, another chance to get it right and live right. To recover my life back from this disease. You taught me how to put God and my recovery first and everything else falls into place. I really can trust that God will provide. I have had many hopeless days in my life but I can tell you the moment I stepped into the house, I felt at peace. Thank you. I can begin my journey to live a clean and sober lifestyle that you have shown me Here at the House of Hope. I can now have the peace and tranquility I had been praying for. Sincerely Y.G.
Dear SHOH,
I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to come to House of Hope. I also want to express my gratitude as I realize how fortunate I am to have the loving treatment that I desperately needed. Here, I was able to learn how to breathe. I’ve stopped beating myself up. I’ve forgiven myself and I’m able to smile when I look in the mirror. This is all because of your compassionate staff (my counselor Cindi is amazing). I’ve been given the chance to learn about soe of my trauma. I no longer will allow it to define me. I can embrace my memories of my dad. Your staff helped me there as well. Again, I thank you from teh bottom of my heart for giving me the hope when I felt hopeless. Sincerely, M.A.
P.S. I had no idea how to cook when I arrived. I do NOW! I completed 3 months and the curriculum was never repeated. The groups were modern and very informative for me. The staff, each and every one of them, had different, compassionate qualities that reflected love as well as empathy for me.
