A Note from Pastor Andy

In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul instructs the Corinthians to eat, drink, and in fact do everything “for the glory of God.” Dietary rules were numerous, and followers of Jesus were to be free from these kinds of rules, so long as their lives still proclaimed the glory of God.

It’s not that these rules didn’t matter any more or weren’t valid. Paul was simply reminding the people of the reason behind the rules. It is easy to forget sometimes, and simply follow the rules for the sake of the rules. But rules start somewhere. Every rule has some motivating impetus. In this case, Paul was reminding the people that the motivating impetus for the dietary rules of the Torah was to glorify God.

One of the five classical functions of the church is kerygma, or proclamation or announcement. The church is called to announce the goodness of God, to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to declare the presence of the Spirit in the world. And we do so in word as well as in deed.

This week in worship, we’ll talk together about what it means to glorify God in what we say and do. How can Maplewood UMC proclaim the goodness of God in our words, our work and our way of being?

It will be week three of our series, “Come to the Table,” and I can’t wait to see all y’all there!

Pastor Andy

A Very Merry Christmas in July is here at Maplewood UMC! A great time to celebrate and shop early for items needed for Build A Gift and for gift cards for the Giving Tree.

Giving Tree

The Giving Tree is outreach to families who need extra assistance at Christmas time. You can take a envelope from the Giving Tree and place a $25 Walmart gift card (or check) in it and put it in the offering plate. There are also envelopes for Christmas wrapping paper to wrap the gifts.

We are offer this opportunity to give in July instead of during the busy holiday. Gifts will be given at Christmas.

Build A Gift (BAG)

BAG is an annual event where children from the community can make several gifts to give to family at no charge.

For items purchased for Build-A-Gift be sure to mark off the item on the list on the message board at the back of the Sanctuary. Also check the message board first before purchasing items, some may have been already purchased. Purchased items can be place at the bottom of the message board
