New Heights Backyard Summer Camp update

For the past four years, New Heights Home & Community Support has run New Heights Backyard daycamps over the summer.  Due to the move this summer, we will not be running Backyard this year.

If you are looking for camps, routines, or plans for over the summer for your child, please contact Tracy Tomiak, our Family Liaison Counsellor for support in seeking these resources. You can reach Tracy at tracy.tomiak@newheightscalgary.com .

The Therapist Maternity Leaves update

Over the year we have had some of our New Heights therapists grow their families. Our Occupational Therapist / Transitioning to Adulthood Coordinator Jen welcomed baby Hazel to her family in June 2019. Occupational Therapist Christine welcomed baby Jack to her family in August 2019, and Speech Language Pathologist Jasmine welcomed baby Anja to her family in November 2019.

We have enjoyed visits from them and their babies throughout this school year!

Reminder: Cold and Flu Season

A reminder that we are in the midst of cold and flu season, and we are looking for your assistance in taking simple steps to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all at New Heights. If a student displays flu like symptoms, they should remain at home and limit contact with others until they are well enough to resume their regular activities.
The school continues to ensure that the classrooms and surrounding environments are cleaned regularly. The students are being reminded to wash their hands with soap frequently, to cover their mouth when they cough, and to discard used tissues. Please practice and encourage these actions at home as well.

We appreicate your help in keeping our students, families, and staff safe and healthy!

We had a great time at PAC’s Ladies and Men’s Nights!
The men got together last month and had a fun time bowling.
The ladies met up and did some shopping! along with some great conversation.
The hope for our ladies/men’s nights is for our New Heights families to connect. If you haven’t had a chance to go yet we will definitely keep you updated with future events. Or, if you have an idea or suggestion for a get together, please let us know!

Tech Spot

ModMath is an app for the iPad

This is an adaptive program that assists students with Mathematical notation.
Often times if a student has difficulty reading his/her own writing, or getting the numbers in a column to line up, it then becomes difficult to master math concepts such as long division, multiplication with multiple digits, as well as more complex concepts such as algebra.

This app provides students with:
  • a virtual piece of graph paper, where they can set up math problems in a format that’s easily legible.
  • a pencil-free platform for doing basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • the ability to complete more complex math assignments, including fractions, square roots and algebraic equations (for older students)
  • the ability to print out the work pages to turn in at school, save to cloud storage, or send worksheets via email or text directly to the teacher
  • the ability to move completed equations to various points on the page.
  • the ability to save assignments in a searchable document library
