Dear St. Alphonsus Families,
I hope you are all staying safe & warm in today's spring winter weather. It's hard to believe that it was almost 70 degrees last Monday. Wisconsin weather...always keeping us on our toes!
This week is the Scholastic Book Fair! We set everything up yesterday after weekend Masses concluded. Your students will all have a chance to shop the Book Fair this week--you can find tons of details & information about this below.
A reminder that tomorrow is a special Out of Uniform day to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Students can wear green & white and St. Patrick's Day outfits to celebrate.
Wednesday is our next Pizza Lunch Fundraiser. A reminder that no hot lunch, ala carte, or milk will be served on Wednesday, so if your child did NOT order a pizza lunch, please be sure to send them with a cold lunch.
Our Lenten all-school service project also kicks off this week! We will be collecting food for the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry. Specifically, they have asked us for oatmeal, soup & crackers, and pasta & pasta sauce. Please only purchase pasta sauce in plastic jars to avoid breaking glass. You can send items to school starting tomorrow, through March 27--check out the flyer below. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
We are pleased to release the 2026-2027 School Calendar below. Preparing the calendar is several weeks of work and includes looking at instructional hours, instructional days, comparing other school & district calendars, and meeting Archdiocesan requirements. Thank you for your patience as we worked together as a Leadership Team with Mrs. Sagat to get this year's calendar squared away. You will also find a downloadable PDF on our website here.
Another reminder that our internal Financial Aid application is linked below. This application is for families who are NOT applying for School Choice. We are able to offer a limited amount of financial aid due to the support we receive from private donors and foundations who share our goal in making Catholic education affordable to all families. These applications are due by April 17. Related, the second round of School Choice applications is now open and will remain open until March 20. You can find more details and a link below.
Lastly, just a brief reminder from me personally to consider joining us at this year's Parish Auction! It is the 25th Anniversary of this event, taking place on Friday, April 24th. Early Bird Registration ends on Friday--you can find all the details below. This is a really fun night, and we put a lot of work into making it a great fundraiser for our parish & school. I would love to have you come see what the auction is all about!

The Next School Choice Application Period Closes Friday, March 20
Think of the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program as a new form of financial aid available to our current families. Our goal with this program is to be able to better assist our families already attending St. Alphonsus in affording Catholic school tuition! Applications for this program re-opened on March 1 and will close again on March 20. We encourage those families who are interested to apply early. Remaining Student Lector Dates Announced!
We have scheduled our last student lector dates of the 2026 school year! Students in grades 2 through 8 are eligible to lector. School students will be lectoring at weekend Masses on the following dates:
March 15 at 9:00am
April 18 at 4:30pm
and May 16 at 4:30pm
We also need gift bearers. If you are interested in having your student participate, please sign up at this link.

Report Cards Were Released On Friday!
Don't forget that report cards were released at the end of the school day on Friday. To check your student's grades, follow these instructions:
- Click on Grades & Attendance on the left hand side.

Select the Standards Grades tab on this screen.
- Click each Course on this window and the Standards grades should open up. You can also select Expand All in the upper right hand corner to expand all courses at once.
Per the Milwaukee Archdiocese, we use a Standards-Based Grading method here at St. Alphonsus School. Here are what the standards mean:
-
1: This really only applies to students who demonstrate no knowledge of the standard. The student may be able to complete an assignment but only with assistance.
-
2: The student isn't at mastery level but is learning the needed vocabulary and learning targets shown in the scoring guide. They stay at this level until they have shown full mastery of the standard being assessed. The student shows a partial understanding and is able to complete an assignment without assistance.
-
3: The student has shown proficiency on the standard. Students may need more than one opportunity to demonstrate mastery of a standard. The student's understanding is demonstrated consistently and work is completed independently.
-
4: The student has shown and applied the knowledge beyond what is expected at a given grade level. The student independently completes self-directed studies. It is high on Bloom's taxonomy level, beyond what has been taught in the classroom, something most students don't obtain, and is usually due to a combination of high ability, high interest, and/or high background knowledge.

Save the Date for Living Stations of the Cross
Students pose each of the 14 Stations while others lead the congregation in prayer for a visual depiction of this beloved Lenten devotion.
This year’s Living Stations will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:00 PM in the church. There will also be a performance on Wednesday, April 1 at 2:00 PM, again in the church. We hope you can join us.
7th & 8th Grade families will receive more information about their students' participation in Living Stations of the Cross this week.

The Book Fair is Here!
You will be able to shop online and students will be able to shop at the fair during specific times throughout the school day this week. In addition, the Book Fair will be open to the public to shop after all weekend Masses on the weekend of March 21 & 22!
There is a lot of information to share with you about the Book Fair, so please read this through thoroughly!
Because of the snow day today, several of the preview and shopping times need to be rearranged. Mrs. Schermetzler will send a separate email update once those are settled so you know what your student's shopping time is. Grades affected by the snow day today are 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th.
Our 3K & 4K Classes are invited to preview and shop the fair with their parents or another family member, in one session. Their preview/shopping time is 2:00 to 3:00pm on Wednesday, March 18. Those who are shopping should check in at the school office and meet your student at the classroom. The classes will walk down to the fair together. Early Childhood parents, if you cannot attend to shop with your child at that time, please don't worry! A wishlist will be made with your child & sent home for review. Mrs. Schermetzler will then fill your child's order to the best of her abilities on Thursday & Friday.
Students can make purchases of their books in 3 ways:
- e-Wallet, which works like an online gift card
- Cash
- Check
e-Wallets are the preferred and easiest method for students to shop. Please see the guide attached below for more information about this. Mrs. Schermetzler also keeps a list of e-Wallets and barcodes at the register and updates this each day. During the weekend or if you are volunteering in person during the week, we can also take credit card. Please do NOT send credit cards with your student to purchase during the school week.
Please note that Wisconsin sales tax rates MUST BE included when figuring out how much your student needs to bring for the Book Fair. The Book Fair will charge 5.9% sales tax on all purchases, so please figure this into the calculations for your student's purchases. This is also why I recommend using the online option! This is the easiest way to have your child shop at our fair and ensures that even if a certain book is not available or you have not done the necessary tax figures, your child can still easily purchase books at the fair.
Please remember that the Book Fair is NOT a bookstore with unlimited inventory. Please note that we have limited quantities of books and I am unable to guarantee that your child will be able to get everything on their wishlist. In the event that a book is sold out, we will do our best to help your child select an alternative book in the same price range, OR, you may use any remaining e-Wallet funds to order the book online through our online fair. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE CHECKS FOR EXACT TOTALS, as I cannot guarantee that your child will get their exact order. But! Books ordered online during our fair still count towards our school and can ensure that your child gets exactly what you want. Some books available online are not available in our in-person store either, so you also get a wide selection. Book fair replenishment is subject to what is available in the warehouse, so if you want to guarantee your child gets a specific book, please order it online.
Lastly, just a point of note: 3K & 4K Families are the only families invited to shop in-person with their students during the school day. If you would like to shop in-person with your student, you may do so on the weekend after all weekend Masses. And if you're there to do that, why not consider volunteering? I could use some more help on Saturday and Sunday when parishioners shop. You can sign up here.

Girls on the Run is Back for the 2026 Season!
Registration is open from February 16th to February 22nd at this link.

The Girls on the Run program inspires girls in Grades 3 through 5 to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence. Together, they experience a sense of belonging and connection as a team. Volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy. At the end of the season, the team completes a Community Impact Project and a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.
This year's practice dates will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30pm. The season will run from March 23rd to June 1st.
Our coaches this year are Mrs. Domzil (5K teacher), Ms. Brennan (former 5th grade teacher), and Mrs. Knautz (3K teacher).

Track & Field Registration Now Open for Students in Grades 4-8!
Track & Field is one of the most inclusive and rewarding sports out there. Whether a student is new to athletics or already active in other sports, track provides a fun environment where everyone can participate, improve, and discover their strenghts. With events that range from sprints, distance running, and relays to long jump, shot put or high jump, there truly is something for every athlete.
Why join the track team?
- Build confidence: Athletes set personal goals and see measurable growth throughout the season
- Improve overall fitness: Track builds speed, strength, endurance and coordination; skills that benefit all sports
- Stay active with friends: Practices are upbeat, energetic and a great social outlet after school
