Padre Serra Tournament Update

Both our Boys and Girls Basketball Teams competed in the Padre Serra Tournament last weekend!

While our boys team unfortunately ended their run during the weekend, we are so proud of them and their accomplishments this season. Congrats, boys!

The Girls Team made it out of the first weekend of play and will continue their run on Wednesday, March 22 at St. Thomas More High School at 7:15pm. Good luck, ladies!

7th Grade Religion

7th Grade Religion recently had a very impactful lesson!

In class, we opened with prayer and then read the Gospel reading from John 4:1-42, the woman at the well.  We discussed why the disciples were amazed at this interaction between Jesus and the woman- concluding the discussion with Jesus doesn’t stereotype or bias when he interacts with others--he treats all people with respect and loves them for who they are.

In small groups, we talked about different groups that may feel marginalized and ways we can extend respect towards them, focusing on seeing past the differences and looking for similarities, particularly that we are all God's children, and Jesus died for all of us and our salvation.

The discussion then moved on to how we give and receive respect: creating a list of ways this is done or can be done in our learning environment. Using these brainstorms, we compiled a list and created a pledge of respect, where all agreed to what was written and then signed it. This will serve as a reminder to all to freest one another with respect, like Jesus did with the woman at the well.

Home & School Happenings

How does Home & School work?

The Home and School Association assists with leadership, recruitment & support for the many school-wide activities that go on during the year. Each of the H&S projects has one or two chairs that help plan and execute their activity. Event chairs add additional volunteers as needed.

The Home and School umbrella covers:

  • Box Tops for Education
  • Dine Out Nights
  • New Family Committee
  • Staff Appreciation
  • Fun Run
  • Trunk or Treat
  • Cookie Walk
  • Ornament Sale
  • Book Fair
  • Father-Daughter Dance
  • Fun Fair
  • School Supplies
  • Parents' Night Out

This week we wanted to introduce you to one of our newest members - Erin Kenth. She will be chairing the Cookie Walk next December! We welcome Erin to Home & School and look forward to working with her.

After learning the ropes (or how the cookie crumbles) this past year alongside Mrs. Schermetzler and Mrs. Young, I am excited to be your Cookie Walk Chair for 2023.

As a working mother of three, I worried that volunteering in the middle of the busy holiday season would leave me feeling a bit like the Grinch. However, collecting cookies in the car line, preparing cookie trays, and selling cookies after all the Masses was a great way to connect with other school families and members of the parish. Giving back to the school is a wonderful way to "fill my cup" before the holidays. While so many things compete for our time, giving back to St. Alphonsus is always worth the extra effort.

I look forward to working with you, swapping cookie recipes, and making memories along the way!

Student Volunteers Are Needed!

We will also need student volunteers again this year!  This counts as service hours for the kids, saves St. Al’s the money we’d otherwise have to pay for adult waitstaff and is a lot of fun!

Students should arrive at 4:30 and will be done between 9:30 and 10:00. Students will assist with table and other set up, as well as serve appetizers to guests during cocktail hour. After that they will work in the dining room, clearing salad plates, serving entrees, bringing coffee carafes to the tables and clearing plates, glasses, silverware, etc. at the end of the meal. We will feed students dinner shortly after arrival.

Student in grades 4-8 are eligible to serve. High schoolers are also welcome. You can sign up your student here.
