Mrs. Schermetzler Says...

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

Last week was a crazy week around here with the annual Scholastic Book Fair! The students had fun shopping and I hope they didn't bring home too much book fair "junk." Lots of books were purchased which always makes me so happy! Thank you for your support of this event!

One of the things I've been doing while in the lead administrator role has been working from the hallways in a cart! This has been such a fun addition to my work day and allows students and staff to see me a lot more in the hallways. I get to spend more time checking in with teachers, supporting students, and in general just seeing what amazing stuff is going on throughout the building. Here are some of the fun things I've gotten to do while tooling around on my cart:

  • Stopping by each classroom every morning. I always check to see if the teachers need anything that day, and students have caught on to this daily question, so now I get student requests too, haha. Some of the best student responses have included "I need a hot chocolate" and "I need spring break!"
  • Having a dance party with our 4K students!
  • Teaching gym class for Mr. Gutche!
  • Purchasing sheep brains and pig kidneys so our science lab can be ready for the upcoming dissection units
  • Getting ready for naptime in 3K (but not getting to take a nap, booo)
  • Taking part in the 5K Question of the Day
  • Playing basketball with Cougar Club

and more!

My cart is also fully decked out now, with more geese (the Mrs. S Mascot), as well as some fun questions of the day for students to answer when they see me in the halls. It has been such a joy to get out from behind my desk!

As we start to wrap up the season of Lent, I am reflecting back on how we as a school have been purposeful in our Lenten journey this year. In addition to silent entry to Mass each week, our students in grades 2 through 8 had the opportunity for reconciliation last week, and our staff has been praying for each other with secret "Lenten prayer buddies." As we close out this season, a few other reminders to help us finish the Lenten season strong:

Join us for Living Stations of the Cross, a very moving Lenten devotion. You have two chances to see it: Tuesday, March 31 at 6:00pm in the church, and Wednesday, April 1 at 2:00pm in the church. Find more details below, and we hope you can join us.

This week will wrap up our short all-school service project: the food drive for the St. Alphonsus pantry! Please continue to send those donations in, as every little bit helps. Find more details below!

Lastly, just a brief reminder from me personally to consider joining us at this year's Parish Auction! It is the 25th Anniversary of this event, taking place on Friday, April 24th. Early Bird Registration has been extended for a few more days, and I would LOVE to see more families attend this night out. You can find all the details below. This is a really fun night, and we put a lot of work into making it a great fundraiser for our parish & school. Sign up is also now open for student volunteers, so be sure to check it out!

I hope you all have a great week. As a reminder, please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything: aschermetzler@st-alphonsus.org.

Thank you for all your support!

Other Important Reminders

Playground Safety Reminders for After School

As the weather gets nicer (hopefully!), we always enjoy seeing families playing at the school playground after school! This is a great way for parents to socialize and kids to get more energy out before heading home for the day.

We have two safety reminders for you as we head into Playground Season:

1) NEW THIS YEAR: If you plan to visit the school playground after school, please park at the back of the playground towards the apartments. Do not park close to the playground, gates, or in the middle of the lot. This will allow our Cougar Club Staff to be able to come out and set up their cones without needing to wait for cars to move, so that the Cougar Club kiddos can get some outside time too.

2) If you plan to stay at the playground after our Cougar Club staff and students have arrived, please note that YOU as the parent are responsible for your child's safety and behavior on the playground. Cougar Club staff are there to watch students attending our after school program. If your child is not attending Cougar Club, please be sure you are addressing your own child's safety & behavior on the playground. Thank you for your cooperation on this!

Scholastic Book Fair - Thank You!

Thank You So Much for Your Support of the St. Alphonsus Book Fair!

Thank you so much for supporting the Book Fair. We are happy to report that many kids bought lots of books and we were also able to stock lots of our classroom libraries and the school library with new books for every student to enjoy! Every purchase, no matter how big or how small, supports St. Alphonsus.

If your student still has funds in their e-wallet, you can continue to shop our online fair here through March 29.

Mrs. Schermetzler is so thankful the help from our many volunteers who assisted during Book Fair Week: Mrs. Reger, Mrs. Scherbarth, Mrs. Eisold, Mrs. Zelinka, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Hokanson, Mrs. Kenth, Mrs. Stieber, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Schneider, plus all the kids who came along to help too! (If I missed anyone it is because my brain is still recovering. I am grateful for all of you!)

Together, our school community does such great things for our school, and the Book Fair is a perfect example! Thank you again for your support!

7th Grade Science Circuits

7th Grade Students Have Been Working Hard in the Science Lab!

Our 7th graders have been hard at work in the lab, learning all about circuits! They created boht a series circuit and a parallel circuit. Their first order of business was getting the circuits working, and then they had to deduce why the parallel circuit resulted in a brighter light!

Here are a few pictures of some of the parallel circuit successes!

In Addition, Student Volunteers Are Also Needed!

This is a great way for kids to perform some community service, saves St. Al's the money we'd otherwise have to pay for adult waitstaff, and is a lot of fun!

Students should arrive at 4:30pm and will be done between 9:30pm and 10:00pm. Students will assist with table and other set up. They will serve appetizers to guests during cocktail hour. After that, they will work in the dining area, clearing salad plates, serving entrees, bringing coffee carafes to the tables and clearing plates, glasses, silverware, etc. at the end of the meal.

We will feed students dinner shortly after arrival. Students should wear a plain, white shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt with comfortable, closed toe shoes.

Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to serve. High schoolers are also welcome. Sign up here!
