Dear Partners,
October’s awareness events offer exciting opportunities for action for professionals, parents/caregivers, and communities, from promoting safe driving and respectful school climates to reducing fire and burn risks.
National Bullying Prevention Month (October 1–31, 2025), led by the National Bullying Prevention Center, encourages us to foster environments rooted in respect and peer support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, nearly one in five high school students reported being bullied on school property. At CSN, we provide a range of data tools, research briefs, and practical guidance to support your efforts in addressing bullying, including cyberbullying. Our recent webinar, Multi-Tiered Approaches to Preventing Bullying and Suicide: Promoting Digital Wellness and Supporting Schools, highlights integrated strategies that promote mental health and digital safety for youth.
Fire Prevention Week (October 5–11, 2025), organized by the National Fire Protection Association, reinforces the importance of fire safety planning in homes and schools. Fires and burns remain the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among U.S. children and adolescents under age 19, according to the CDC. This year CSN released the Unintentional Fire and Burn Prevention Resource Guide, which highlights current data and strategies to help state, jurisdiction, and local health departments and their partners expand and enhance their prevention efforts.
We’re also recognizing Teen Driver Safety Week (October 19–25, 2025). Teens represent just 3.7% of licensed drivers, but are involved in 8.7% of all crashes, according to the National Safety Council, underscoring the need for targeted prevention. Proven prevention strategies including limiting peer passengers, reducing nighttime driving, and encouraging consistent seat belt use can make a measurable difference. To support this work, CSN, in partnership with the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention, developed the Teen Driver Safety: National Center Guidance Report, offering actionable tools for local communities and fatality review teams.
