Note from Our Director

Dear Partners,

This month marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse and neglect remain a critical issue in the United States, with devastating consequences for children, families, and society. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), at least 1 in 7 children experienced abuse or neglect in the past year—a number that is likely underestimated due to underreporting. In 2021 alone, 1,820 children lost their lives to abuse and neglect. According to the National Library of Medicine, approximately one in four children experience child abuse or neglect in their lifetime.

Beyond the human toll, child maltreatment also imposes a significant economic burden. In 2018, the total lifetime economic cost of child abuse and neglect was estimated at $592 billion, a figure comparable to the costs of major public health crises like heart disease and diabetes (CDC).

Preventing child abuse requires awareness, advocacy, and action. One resource that supports these efforts is the Navigating Child Abuse Prevention Resources and Interventions Webinar.

Additional resources related to child safety and related cross-cutting topics are highlighted in the newsletter below, with those from our CSN-A partners highlighted in purple.

Please share these resources widely with your networks.

Kindly,

Jennifer Leonardo

Upcoming Webinar: Insights from Title V on Partnering with Federally Funded Programs

The Title V Federal Block Grant was established in 1935 to create Federal/State partnerships to address health service needs of mothers, infants and children. This grant is funded by the Health Resources Service Administration Maternal and Child Health Bureau and provides funding to public health departments in all 50 states and 9 jurisdictions (DC, U.S. territories, and freely associated states). According to HRSA, in 2023, this block grant supported services to an estimated 59 million people nationwide, including 94% of all pregnant women, 98% of infants and 59% of children, including those with special health care needs.

Title V agencies working in injury and violence prevention must address a broad range of topics across many populations and often face a myriad of challenges to accomplish this work, including sufficient funding and workforce capacity. The ability to effectively partner with other federally funded organizations and programs is essential for Title V agencies to accomplish their goals. In this webinar, Title V and Injury & Violence Prevention leaders will discuss their strategies, insights, and lessons learned by navigating these partnerships.

This event, on April 22nd at 3 PM Eastern Time, is led by the Children’s Safety Now Alliance (CSN-A), consisting of leaders and experts representing national organizations, federal agencies, state health departments, hospitals, and universities who help lead the Children’s Safety Network’s (CSN) efforts to reduce fatal and serious injuries among infants, children and adolescents. Register here.
