Note from Our Director
Dear Partners,

October is a full month for injury and violence prevention awareness with Bullying Prevention, Pedestrian Safety, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness months underway.

Bullying Prevention: About 1 in 5 high school students reported being bullied at school and more than 1 in 6 high school students reported being cyberbullied in the last year. Bullying can be prevented, and the CSN resources below share how parents, schools, and states can help:

Child Pedestrian Safety: Each year approximately 600 children and adolescents die from pedestrian injuries. More than 3 in 4 pedestrian injuries in children and adolescents are related to motor vehicle traffic. Learn more about how to keep children safe in CSN’s pedestrian safety resources, including our new Child Pedestrian Safety Resource Guide in the spotlight section below:

Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Prevention: Each year, approximately 3,400 infants in the US die suddenly and unexpectedly. Research shows there are several ways to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related causes of infant death. Below are recent CSN resources on safe sleep:

Throughout this newsletter, you will find resources from our Children's Safety Now Alliance partners highlighted in purple.

Please widely share these resources with your networks.
Kindly,
Jennifer Leonardo, PhD
New CSN Resource:
Child and Youth Pedestrian Safety Resource Guide
Everyone is a pedestrian whether you are walking, using a wheelchair, a scooter, roller skates or skateboard – but children, and in particular, American Indian/Alaska Native and Black children, are at higher risk for death and injury. In 2020, one in five children (20.4%) under the age of 15 killed in crashes were pedestrians. By combining engineering, education and the enforcement of laws and policies, pedestrian deaths and injuries can be prevented. CSN’s new resource, Child and Youth Pedestrian Safety Resource Guide, shares links of organizations, data sources, prevention resources, and policies that can help protect children and adolescents.
