Note from Our Director

Dear Partners,

June is LGBTQ Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating people with LGBTQ identities and acknowledging the disparities they continue to face.

For us at Children's Safety Network (CSN), this means continuing to elevate health equity for LGBQ+ youth as a national priority, provide technical assistance to states and jurisdictions in this area, disseminate resources that build the workforce capacity to address social determinants of health, increase access to resources, and help others understand and address health equity.

In early April, CSN released an infographic and a fact sheet focused on injury and violence disparities among LGBQ+ youth. More information about these resources can be found below.

Last month, to provide Title V agencies with information on nationally-focused public health organizations that focus on child safety, CSN, in collaboration with the Children's Safety Now Alliance, published a new resource guide, "Child Safety National Public Health Partners." The guide presents a brief description of each agency or organization, followed by topic areas and activities related to child safety that may provide opportunities for collaboration.

Additional resources related to these and other child safety and cross-cutting topics are provided in the newsletter below, with those from our CSN-A partners highlighted in purple.

Please widely share these resources with your networks.

Kindly,

Jennifer Leonardo

New CSN LGBQ+ Resources

Youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, or other non-heterosexual identity (LGBQ+) are resilient1 and diverse, representing every racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic group and are present in every community across the U.S.2 They make up 24% of the high-school aged population.3 While acceptance, affirmation, and inclusion of youth with these identities has increased, significant yet preventable disparities persist.4 Data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS; a survey that is representative of 45 states)3 show that LGBQ+ youth have disproportionately higher rates of experiencing injury and violence, compared to their heterosexual peers.

In Children's Safety Network's new infographic and fact sheet, learn more about injury and violence disparities between LGBQ+ and heterosexual youth, risk factors that help us understand these disparities, and protective factors that can prevent these disparities.
