Note from Our Director
Dear Partners,

Having just completed a robust National Poison Prevention Week, I am inspired to continue our important work and strengthen our collaborations to raise awareness and prevent poisoning among infant, children, and adolescents.

According to a study recently released in Pediatrics, accidental pediatric cannabis edible ingestions increased by 1,375% from 2017 to 2021. I was recently interviewed by Education Development Center (EDC) regarding this topic, where I discuss possible causes of this increase, including that cannabis edibles are often packaged to look like candy. With April bringing festivities that often center on candy, I want to call our attention to this important and emerging issue.

Drawing on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Up and Away Campaign, one of the best ways to prevent this phenomenon is to store cannabis edibles far away from the curious reach of children and off of coffee tables, countertops, kitchen tables, or other easily accessible surfaces. Through our partnerships we can widely disseminate these best practices and help prevent accidental ingestions.

Throughout this newsletter, you will find resources from our Children's Safety Now Alliance partners highlighted in purple.

Please widely share these resources with your networks.

Kindly,
Jennifer Leonardo, PhD
