Note from Our Director
Dear Partners,

The Children’s Safety Network continues to provide technical assistance to state and jurisdiction health departments, promote evidence-based strategies and programs, develop resources and analyze data to drive decision making to achieve health equity among our nation’s children and adolescents. This month we are holding focus group discussions with state level public health practitioners to understand their organizational needs to effectively and sustainably address health inequities.

This newsletter features a new blog post on the need for increased attention on health inequities and outcomes among children and adolescents living in rural areas. I recently attended a National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety Stakeholder Advisory Board Meeting where I was reinvigorated by the work to research and address farm safety, agricultural injury, and mental health among children and adolescents living and working in rural areas. Throughout this newsletter, you will find resources from our Children's Safety Now Alliance partners highlighted in purple.

Kindly,

Jennifer Leonardo, PhD

New CSN Blog: Health Disparities in Rural Childhood Injury
Rural lands comprise 97% of the land in the United States with sparsely populated communities located far from urban centers and many resources. One in five Americans live in rural areas (US Census Bureau, 2019) and children and adolescents living in these areas experience injury rates 55% higher than those compared to urban areas (CDC, 2020). Among social, economic and environmental determinants closely linked to injury disparities are lack of public transportation, lack of access to child care and exposure to occupational hazards.

In our new CSN blog post, Erin Ficker, co-manager of CSN’s Child Safety Learning Collaborative, explores ideas on how states and rural communities can partner to mitigate these challenges and promote enhanced injury prevention.
