Note from Our Director

Dear Partners,

As the holiday season ramps up, it is important to continue working towards helping children enjoy the festivities safely.

December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, which seeks to raise awareness of toy safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 152,800 children ages 14 or younger sustained toy-related injuries in 2021. Especially dangerous are high-powered magnetic toys, which, if swallowed, can cause serious internal injuries. To prevent injuries from high-powered magnets, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents and other caregivers to keep small or loose magnets out of sight and reach of children, supervise young children when they are playing with magnetic toys, and use magnets in smaller sets.

To prevent injuries from other types of toys, AAP offers the following recommendations:

  • Choose age-appropriate toys
  • Choose larger toys to ensure children can't choke on them or swallow them
  • Ensure toys are sturdy to avoid breakage and subsequent sharp edges
  • Make sure toys are nontoxic

Resources related to toy safety and other child safety topics are shared in the newsletter below. Resources from our CSN-A partners are highlighted in purple.

Please widely share these resources with your networks.

Kindly,

Jennifer Leonardo

New CSN Blog Post: Making Sleep Safer for Infants

In 2020, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID)—a term used to describe the sudden and unexpected death of a baby less than 1 year old—claimed the lives of nearly 3,400 infants in the United States. As with most public health concerns, certain communities are disproportionately impacted. For example, among American Indian, Alaska Native, and Black infants, rates of SUID are double the rates among White infants.

CSN’s new blog post, originally published by Education Development Center (EDC), presents a roundtable on the need to consider health disparities and culture in safe sleep initiatives.
