Dear Partners,
As the holiday season ramps up, it is important to continue working towards helping children enjoy the festivities safely.
December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, which seeks to raise awareness of toy safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 152,800 children ages 14 or younger sustained toy-related injuries in 2021. Especially dangerous are high-powered magnetic toys, which, if swallowed, can cause serious internal injuries. To prevent injuries from high-powered magnets, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents and other caregivers to keep small or loose magnets out of sight and reach of children, supervise young children when they are playing with magnetic toys, and use magnets in smaller sets.
To prevent injuries from other types of toys, AAP offers the following recommendations:
- Choose age-appropriate toys
- Choose larger toys to ensure children can't choke on them or swallow them
- Ensure toys are sturdy to avoid breakage and subsequent sharp edges
- Make sure toys are nontoxic
