Dear Partners,
November 18 is National Injury Prevention Day. Improving home safety is an important strategy for preventing injuries among children—particularly infants and toddlers.
A new report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that many injuries and deaths among children younger than 5 years are linked to nursery products, such as highchairs, cribs and mattresses, infant carriers, and strollers. The report found that nursery products were associated with more than 60,000 injuries among children in this age group treated in emergency departments in 2023. It is also estimated that 532 infant deaths were associated with these products from 2019 to 2021. Unsafe sleeping environments—such as soft bedding added to cribs—accounted for 126 of these deaths. Information and resources on how to prevent these injuries and deaths, and improve home safety in general, are provided further on in this newsletter.
CSN will be hosting two webinars in November led by leaders in child safety and injury prevention. On November 20, experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The Trevor Project will discuss data showing persistent disparities in bullying and suicide experienced by LGBTQ+ youth.* This webinar will be moderated by Alex Keuroghlian, Director of the Division of Education and Training at The Fenway Institute and Children’s Safety Now Alliance member.
On November 21st, we will hold our second State Technical Assistance Webinar on the topic of workforce development: Improving Prevention Messaging with Your Workforce. Presenter Lisa Hines, Associate Director for Communications for CDC’s Division of Injury Prevention, will discuss ways to improve messaging focused on suicide prevention but also applicable to other injury prevention topics.
Additional resources related to child safety and injury prevention are provided in the newsletter below, with those from our CSN-A partners highlighted in purple.
Please widely share these resources with your networks.
Kindly,
Jennifer Leonardo
