Leadership Team Updates

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

Welcome back from break! We hope you had a lovely and relaxing time off and were able to spend it with some family & friends. The hall are starting to be decked at school, with Christmas decorations coming out in classrooms and hallways! This is always such a joyful time of year to be an educator.

We are so excited to welcome in the season of Advent this year, and we have a lot of Advent focused activities planned. In the Catholic faith, the Advent season and Christmastime are actually two separate seasons. The church dictates that the four weeks before Christmas as a time to prepare the way of the Lord for His coming as our King and Savior. The Christmas "season" begins on December 25 and lasts the 12 days through to Epiphany on January 6. The very popular 12 Days of Christmas song is not about the 12 days leading up to Christmas, but the 12 days after!

We have a lot of wonderful Advent activities planned this season, and all families will be receiving a flyer that highlights those activities this week. However, we wanted to specifically call out a few for you!

First, we will have our Advent Wreath Blessing on Friday at 2:00pm. You are welcome to join us and bring an advent wreath from home to be blessed.

Second, the church liturgy committee would like to invite families to light the advent wreath at each mass on Saturdays and Sundays. If your family would be interested in lighting the advent wreath during mass, please contact Francis Zelinka to sign up.

You can see more of the Advent activities we have planned in the flyer below.

Lastly, don't forget that this weekend is another Pack the Church at the 11:00am mass on Sunday, December 3. Come on out for mass, support our student lectors, and wear your unity shirts and St. Alphonsus school gear! We are also still in need of two gift bearers for this weekend's mass. You can sign up below. We hope to see you there!

It's time for the next rounds of Pack the Church & Student Lectors at our Sunday Masses!

Our popular student lector program is back at Sunday masses this winter, on these dates:

Sunday, December 3 at 11:00am Mass

Sunday, January 28 at 9:00am Mass

Sunday, February 25 at 11:00am Mass

St. Alphonsus students in grades 2-8 are eligible to be lectors. Students in all grades can be gift bearers. You can sign your child up here. Parents, when signing up please include YOUR email so that we can contact you the week of your students participation.

Lectors will practice with Mrs. Schermetzler on Fridays before the weekend masses!

In addition, all of our student lector dates will continue to be Pack the Church dates for school! We would love to have the church filled with St. Alphonsus School families on these dates. Students should wear their Unity shirts or another St. Alphonsus shirt so that they are easily visible as St. Al's students. We hope to see you there!

Grades 6-8, Sign Up For Forensics!

Sign up for our award-winning Forensics program is now open!

Today, the middle schoolers heard a presentation from Mrs. Gutche about Forensics, a competitive public speaking club open to 6-8th graders. The 2023-2024 season is right around the corner and she'd love to have your child join the team! Joining Forensics will help students try something new, get out of their comfort zones, look great on high school and college applications, and build confidence for public speaking in high school and beyond! Also, there is something for everyone! Students can perform humorous pieces, serious pieces, historical pieces, act pieces out with friends, and more!

Practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45 in Mrs. Gutche's room (room 306). Meets will be on Fridays and/or Saturdays from late January through March. All students were given an information sheet and permission slip today. Please direct any questions to Mrs. Gutche. Thank you!

8th Grade NASA Science Program

Two of our teachers recently won a grant from the Rotary Club of Whitnall Park!

4th Grade teacher Mrs. Gutche and Music Teacher Ms. Webber both received grant awards from this group, whose mission is to actively support education as a means to improve community cooperation and international understanding through the principles of Rotary.

Mrs. Gutche will be using her $250 reward to go towards the annual 4th Grade trip to Madison, and Ms. Webber will be using her $180 reward to buy some new drums for the music room!

Congratulations to both of these deserving teachers!

SCRIP Makes Sense!

This week's SCRIP updates:

It’s less than a month to Christmas! Do you need gift cards for your office, or small gifts for those folks you want to remember at this time of year? SCRIP can help you! If you haven’t enrolled yet, it’s not too late.

Not sure what to give your teachers as a gift--you can’t go wrong with SCRIP BUCKS!

These are gift certificates that can be redeemed for SCRIP gift cards. This is my triple win! 1) Your teacher receives a gift, 2) You earn the rebate on what they purchased, and 3) our school earns as well.

Hop on the SCRIP bandwagon! Start saving towards your tuition!

Signing up for SCRIP is easy, and there is even an app to use! Register here, using the enrollment code 855F1LF31943. You can also check out our Enrollment Forms and FAQ on our school website. If you would like to order via paper order form, you can find that here.

Any questions, please call or email our SCRIP coordinator, Vickie Major at 414-704-0526 or via email here.

Local School & Alumni News

St. Alphonsus Alum Riley Nowakowski scored a touchdown in this week's Badger game vs. the Minnesota Gophers! Riley, Class of 2016, caught a 5-yard pass from quarterback Tanner Mordecai to help increase the Badgers lead over the Gophers in a win that saw the Paul Bunyan Axe return to Wisconsin. Congrats Riley, and Go Badgers!

Please note the below picture is clearly NOT from this weekend's game, haha.
