Dear Friends,
When I served as a student pastor at First UMC in Webster Groves, one of the members and I shared a small world story. The First Webster member’s brother was a member of, Vermilion United Methodist Church, the church my husband, Steve, grew up in.
Even though this was a good point of connection, what I remember most about this wonderful man was his dedication to showing up for worship. A few years prior he had had a stroke that impacted the left side of his body. He could not use his left arm and had limited ability to move his left leg. Getting from his house to the car, then into the church took a lot of time and seemingly a lot of effort. But he was at church almost every Sunday without fail.
He never said a lot, but his presence spoke volumes. By simply showing up, he testified to his faith and to the power of being present as part of a faith community. By simply showing up, he was a source of encouragement for me, and most likely for others.

During Advent this year we will be celebrating the “The Gift of Being Present.” The gift of God’s presence with us as the baby Jesus; the gift of being present with God through worship and prayer, and the gift of being present with others.
The gift of showing up—being present is so very often the very best present we can give! Simply being present with someone can bring them hope, peace, joy, and love—the priceless gifts we celebrate as we light the candles on the Advent wreath.
This Advent sermon series is a special one! I hope you will share the gift of your presence with others during worship this Advent and Christmas season. I have no doubt that by simply showing up, you will be a source of hope and encouragement for someone in the room.
See you on Sunday!
God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Kim
