Leadership Team Updates

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

Welcome to November!

We can hardly believe how fast the school year is already flying by. It's time to start thinking of the holiday season--or, if you're Mrs. Schermetzler, it's time to start decorating (that's one of her Christmas trees here, haha).

We have a couple of quick reminders for you and then we will turn it over to Father Kevin for this week's update, who will share more with you about the principal search.

First, there is a new revision to our school Yearly Events calendar linked below. It is also on our school website here. As a reminder, this calendar will be re-released each month as updates and events are added.

Second, we decided to publish the dress code in its entirety in this week's newsletter, below. We get a lot of questions about dress code during this time of year and we wanted to have you take a look at it directly. In addition, please remember that shorts and skorts are no longer allowed. Shorts and skorts can only be worn between April 1st and October 31st, except at the leadership team's discretion. In addition, for your convenience, we have also published below a list of all special dress and out-of-uniform days for the month, so that you can plan ahead!

Third, remember that our School Advisory Commission and the Leadership Team would also like to invite you to the next School Advisory Commission Meeting on Tuesday, November 14 at 5:00pm in the Community Room. This is an open session, which means you can submit questions for the group to answer, come learn about the role of SAC and how they assist & support School Leadership, and talk with our school leaders! The Leadership Team in particular would love to see you there. If you have concerns you want to talk with us about, this is a great, small forum in which to meet with us in person to discuss.

Questions for this event can be submitted via email to our School Advisory Commission Chair Dawn Eisold. Please submit your questions by tomorrow, November 7. We hope to see you there so we can thank you in person for your support of our team and our school!

The last note from us is about our Thanksgiving Food Drive, which is kicking off this week. If you are able, please be generous and consider giving, as there are a lot of families in need this holiday season. Each class is responsible for bringing a specific item--see below for details!

And now we will turn it over to Father Kevin below to talk about the principal search process!

Have a great week!

Ms. Parey, Mrs. Schermetzler, and Mrs. Bruhn

Interim Leadership Team

Dear School Families,

Thank you for your continued support of Catholic education and of our wonderful school in particular! I wanted to give you an update on the principal search process--below you will find a timeline for the search for a permanent leader of our school.

You will notice that we will now begin the formal search process after the holiday season and at the beginning of the New Year. This change reflects a couple of important facts:

First, Ms. Taimi Parey has done a wonderful job as our interim principal along with the collaborative support of the leadership team. I intend to keep Ms. Parey at the helm of our school with the leadership team in support through the balance of the school year as we continue to search. Given their hard and effective work, to bring in a new leader who is brand new to our school would not be most productive at this time.

Second, the hiring season in the realm of education is very seasonal; roughly encompassing the winter and spring seasons. I want the best principal we can find for our school and I believe that we have the best chance of finding that individual after the start of the New Year.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. While I offer you these dates to help keep you informed, the search can always move a little quicker or slower than we intend. The timeline below represents our best estimates:

November to December:  Announcement of Upcoming Search

January:  Soliciting feedback from school community; forming interview committee(s)

January to Mid-March:  Official posting soliciting candidate resumes

Late March: first round of interviews

Early April: second round of interviews

Mid-April: third round of interviews (if needed)

Late April: Final reference checking and offers made

May-June: New principal onboarding and transition work

God Bless You!

 Fr. Kevin

Dress Code Reminders

As the seasons change, we naturally get a lot of questions regarding Dress Code. We wanted to remind you that the dress code can be found beginning on page 38 of the published Family Handbook, which is located on our website here. However, we also wanted to post the dress code directly:

ST. ALPHONSUS CATHOLIC SCHOOL DRESS CODE

All students in 5k through 8th grade must follow the dress code requirements listed below. While students in 3k and 4k are not required to abide by these requirements, the Principal and/or appropriate teachers may require that students dress accordingly on certain days throughout the school year. The dress code helps foster a positive learning atmosphere, promotes modesty, and eliminates distractions and competition. We expect all students to be neat, clean, and appropriately dressed for their Christian learning environment. The success of the dress code is dependent upon cooperation with parents/guardians.

Uniform Code

No emblems or insignias are allowed as part of the uniform unless a specific exception is stated. Only the clothing items identified below are acceptable pieces of the uniform.

Shirts

● Grades 5K - 5: Navy blue, white, and light blue color.

● Grades 6 – 8: Navy blue, white, light blue, and red color.

● Collared with short or long sleeves.

● Polo, buttoned-down blouse, or dress-shirt.

● Only white short-sleeve undershirts are allowed.

● Midriff must be covered at all times.

Sweaters

● Grades 5K - 5: Navy blue, white, and light blue color.

● Grades 6 – 8: Navy blue, white, light blue, and red color.

● Plain knit slip-over (sweater vest) or cardigan is allowed.

● Sweatshirt or pullover with a hood purchased through the St. Alphonsus Catholic School approved spirit wear vendor.  (PLEASE NOTE THAT the Leadership Team has decided that St. Alphonsus HOODIES ARE ALLOWED as long as students do not wear the hood up!)

Pants

● Navy blue or khaki color.

● Must be worn at waist level at all times.

● Must be chino, khaki, capris, or dress pants without pockets on legs.

● No cargo style pants.

● Form fitting knit fabrics are not allowed.

Shorts and Skorts

Shorts and Skorts can only be worn between April 1st and October 31st, except at the principal’s discretion.

● Navy blue or khaki color.

● Must be worn at waist level at all times.

● Must go past the fingertips when hands are at the student’s side. Must be same length all around 38 (front and back)

● Must be chino or dress shorts or skorts without pockets on legs.

● No cargo style shorts or skorts.

● Form fitting knit fabrics are not allowed.

Jumper and Skirts

● Navy blue, khaki color, Belair plaid (Merry Mart Uniforms), or hunter/classic navy plaid (Land’s End).

● Must be worn at waist level at all times.

● Must wear tights, bike shorts, or leggings under skirts

Socks

● Must be crew length or shorter.

● A small insignia or logo are permissible.

Footwear

● Closed toe and closed heel shoes.

● Flip flops, jellies, sandals, and Crocs are not allowed.

Jewelry

● Minimal earrings, necklaces, and rings are allowed.

● Only ears may be pierced.

Hats

● Hats only allowed to be worn outside when weather permits.

Hair

● Hair should be worn clean, neat, and a natural looking color. Principal will have the sole discretion to require a student to change his/her hair to comply with this policy.

Physical Education Dress Code

Students will bring to school and take home all gym clothes on the days that physical education is scheduled. All students must wear athletic shoes that can be tightened.

Grades 5K – 4:

● Uniform must be worn during physical education.

Grades 5 – 8:

● Knit shirt, t-shirt, or polo-type shirt.

● Sweatpants.

● Athletic shorts. Must be longer than fingertip length with arms at sides. Same length in front and in back.

● Leggings that are calf length or longer. The entire legging must be opaque and with no transparent or cut-out sections. Shorts must be worn over leggings if leggings are worn.

● Stud earrings only.

● It is recommended that parents provide a carrying bag for gym clothes.

Non-Uniform Dress Code

Clothing other than uniforms may be worn by students on:

● Award for participation in school fundraisers.

● Field Trips, unless otherwise specified.

● Birthdays. If the birthday does not fall on a school day or if it falls on a mass day, the student may notify the teacher and select another day.

● Picture Day.

● At the Principal’s discretion.

All items must be within Catholic tenets. In addition to items permitted as part of the uniform, the following clothing items are allowed:

● Jeans.

● Athletic wear.

● T-shirts and sweatshirts.

● Clothing must be free of any pictures, writing, emblems, or insignias that are offensive, inappropriate or distracting.

● Midriff must be covered at all times.

● All items must match uniform lengths.

● Must be worn at waist level at all times.

Scouting Days

Members of Boy Scouts including Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts may wear the scouting uniform on den, pack, troop, or patrol meeting days for which the student is a member.  (PLEASE NOTE THAT SPECIAL UNIFORMS & SHIRTS MAY ALSO BE WORN FOR OTHER DAYS AS SPECIFIED BY THE PRINCIPAL. Examples are Battle of the Books or Athletic Wear on Game Days.)

Non-Compliance with the Dress Code

The principal and teachers will enforce compliance to the dress code. The student will be required to change into different clothing either with spare clothing stored at school or with a change of clothing brought by a parent/guardian or designee. Failure of students to comply with the dress code undermines the educational environment at St. Alphonsus. Further discipline may occur per the school discipline policy.

November & December Lunch Menus

Ala Carte Lunch Options Return!

It is with great excitement that the Cougar Café announces the return of a la carte during the lunch period! Beginning Wednesday, November 1st, we will be offering an array of healthy snacks and beverages to grades 4-8 ONLY

Please have a conversation with your students regarding whether or not you would like them making purchases, what their monetary limits will be, and how to make appropriate choices. In addition, please check your child’s lunch account balance on RevTrak here. If your child has a negative lunch account balance, then they will not be able to make a la carte purchases. Below is an itemized pricing list of the foods that will be available. Please note that not every item listed is available every day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Katie Cech, our Hot Lunch Program Coordinator.

PLEASE DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON A LA CARTE FOR LUNCH. IF ONE OF THE COUGAR CAFE STAFF IS NOT PRESENT THAT DAY, THEN THEY CAN ONLY SERVE HOT LUNCH. IN THAT CASE, THERE WILL BE NO ALA CARTE OPTIONS AVAILABLE.

Fun Run Final Stats

Our Fun Run was a huge success and we’re excited to share the final results with you!

In total we raised $27,166.36! Of that total, 77% of that came from non-parent pledges! Wow! Thanks so much for your hard work to make this happen! These funds will be used to purchase a new playground structure. We’re excited to start this project and are currently in the process of reviewing quotes. We look forward to sharing additional information with families as the project gets underway.

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!

Girl Scout News

4th & 5th Grade Girl Scouts Celebrate Veterans Day by Welcoming Back an Honor Flight!

Girl Scout Troop 11412 attended the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight parade this past weekend at the airport. It was an honor to be able to welcome home the Veterans from their day in Washington DC and express our gratitude for their service.

Thank you to all veterans and your families for your service. Please join us on Wednesday, November 8 at our regularly-scheduled school mass at 8:00am as we will honor veterans during this time.

Afterwards, please join us in the community room for a short reception to thank you for your service!

4th & 5th Grade Girl Scouts Try to Earn Bronze Award!

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is a nationally recognized achievement and is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can earn. Troops must work on a service project that will leave a lasting positive impact in the community.

Troop 11412 from 4th and 5th grade has decided to update the Wiggle Room at Church and make it more family friendly. This project will include painting, cleaning, creating artwork & adding toys, bookshelves and furniture.

Our troop will be covering most of the renovation costs, but we could use a little extra support to make this room really special. The troop is hosting an Out-Of-Uniform Day on Tuesday, November 14. Bring in your donation of $1 or more to help support this project and students can be out of uniform that day! Please send your donation in a envelope marked Troop 11412 Wiggle Room Donation.

SCRIP Makes Sense!

This week's SCRIP updates:

The holidays are coming! Some of you may wonder “What can I get my child’s teacher or a staff member for Christmas?”  Why not gift them some SCRIP Bucks?

SCRIP Bucks are gift certificates that you give to your favorite person in whatever denomination you like. ($5/$10/$25). Your gift can be redeemed for anything SCRIP sells. In the past, teachers have saved up their SCRIP Bucks and have purchased big ticket items.

This is what I call the TRIPLE WIN!

1.   Your teacher wins (because it's a gift!)

2.   You win because you will receive the credit for whatever your giftee purchases.

3.   The school wins as part of the rebate helps the bottom line.

Don't forget the other TRIPLE WIN! Purchasing SCRIP for St. Al's Dine Out Nights help you, Home & School, and the school itself! Order those Cousins gift cards today to get them in time for November 8.

Hop on the SCRIP bandwagon! Start saving towards your tuition!

Signing up for SCRIP is easy, and there is even an app to use! Register here, using the enrollment code 855F1LF31943. You can also check out our Enrollment Forms and FAQ on our school website. If you would like to order via paper order form, you can find that here.
