Farm News

This week we were able to get in the fields to plant garlic! To the left is a photo of Jr. Farmer Suzanna helping her mom (Katie) plant. Suzie is always a good helper and told Katie, "Mommy, I like caring for plants. If we don't care for plants, we won't have any food". At just 4 and a half, she's already learning what it means to be a good steward to the land. She's a wise one, that Suzie.

Earlier in the week we were able to get ground ready to plant winter barley. This barley will serve as a cover crop to control soil erosion and suppress weed growth. For us, it has an added benefit - we'll harvest the barley in July for cattle feed.

While visiting last week to help out with our events, Cousin Pete made a new friend - a honey bee! Honey bees are extremely important crop pollinators and essential to the growing process.

Honey bee facts:

Honey bees pollinate 1/3 of the world's food! Honey bees help fight cancer - scientists have found that honey was effective in reducing the growth and spread of cancerous tumors.

Honey bees can predict storms - they use the earth's magnetic field to navigate, but these same waves warn them of a pending storm. Next time you notice no bees buzzing around or hovering over flower beds, you might want to grab your umbrella! These little guys are amazing - please help protect them!
