The PTO extends a great big THANK YOU to all the parents who contributed to the Staff Appreciation Lunch on October 13th. We heard from so many teachers and staff about how much the PTO support means to them especially on those very long conference days. It is more complicated to offer meals these days but is a real privilege to serve up some TLC to all of those TJ staff who are working so hard for our kids.

Upcoming Webinar: Transgender/Non-binary Allyship 101 - November 3rd, 12 p.m.
|
|
There is no playbook on how to be a parent or caregiver. This sometimes becomes even more clear when a child comes out as transgender and/or non-binary. Parents and caregivers (including school staff, extend family, friends and anyone who loves and supports youth) can sometimes feel lost navigating complex and nuanced journeys around gender discovery. A child in transition can bring up a lot for adults: a range of questions, concerns, and emotions--from elation to fear and everything in-between. This talk will cover some high-level basics of supporting a child on a gender journey, dispel common misconceptions, and provide recommended resources as you travel this path with your student. Register here.

Con Res Corner: the 5 Rs of Restorative Practices
|
|
Let’s talk more about Restorative Practices! The true essence of RP lies in the “5 R words” that make up its’ meaning. Let’s break them down.
Relationship ~ The key to success!
Respect ~ It must be earned and it must go both ways.
Responsibility ~ When people are accountable, we can begin to examine the conflict more closely and realize a better choice could have been made.
Repair ~ What needs to be done to make it right? As a result of working together to repair the harm, communities and families can heal.
Reintegration ~ How will someone or a group be welcomed back into the community?
|
|
|
Relationship and Respect lay the foundation of RP, while Responsibility, Repair, and Reintegration are part of the actual process. Keep the 5 Rs in mind when resolving conflict with your kids and families. Teachers and staff also may think about how to make these RP components part of their classroom rituals and routines.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
|
|
Your digestive system plays a key role in your overall health, impacting how you feel and function. Here are FIVE reasons to keep your gut healthy (and what to eat to help!)
-
Your gut acts like a second brain!: The gut and brain are hardwired together. Many studies have linked changes in your microbiome to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Some research has found that eating probiotics may have similar effects as antidepressants in helping ease symptoms of depression and anxiety.
-
It can help keep your skin clear: having a healthy microbiome helps regulate bacteria in other parts of your body, including your skin! When your gut microbiome becomes unbalanced, it may cause inflammation that impacts the entire body, including the skin, which can lead to breakouts.
-
Your microbiome can strengthen your immune system: a large portion of your immune system is based on your digestive system. Your immune system depends on the microbiome to function properly.
-
It can help you stay at a healthy weight: Several studies have shown ther eis a difference in the microbiome of people who are obese compared to those who are lean. Why? The bacteria in your digestive system help break down fat, extract calories from food, and affect the production of appetite-regulating hormones.
-
It may play a role in arthritis: An overactive immune system (which can happen if your gut is not healthy and happy) can lead to autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
