& Don't Forget to Turn Your Clocks Back

A Note From the Principal:

We loved celebrating all the Halloween fun with our students this week! Now it’s time to roll those clocks back, settle into the season, and begin preparing our hearts for Advent.

A few friendly reminders as we head into November:

Morning Drop-Off: Our students need to be in the building by 7:45 a.m. We have noticed that our car lane is relatively quiet between 7:30 and 7:40, followed by a big rush right at 7:45. Please help us make mornings a little smoother by arriving a few minutes earlier. Every minute counts as we get our day started!

A Little Weekend Clean-Up: This weekend would be a great opportunity to have your children help clean out the back seats of your vehicles. We understand that life gets busy (we are parents, too!), but we are noticing quite a few items falling out of vehicles during drop-off and dismissal. This creates a safety concern for our students and staff. Please encourage your children to take ownership of their belongings and help keep the car lane safe for everyone.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Mark your calendars for November 16 and 17! These conferences are an important opportunity to connect with your child's teacher and discuss their progress. Information regarding sign-ups and scheduling will be sent home next week.

Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and cooperation. We are grateful for our St. Jude families and look forward to all the wonderful things this next season will bring!

Godspeed,

Principal Molly Hibler

Important Reminder: Student Drinks

Please remember to send your child to school with a refillable water bottle each day. Students may also use the regular water fountains throughout the day.

School lunches include a milk or water option. If your child brings lunch from home, please be sure to pack a drink in their lunchbox.

A Note From the Nurse:

Attention Families of 5th Grade Students

All 5th grade students will be having a vision and hearing screening conducted the week of Nov 9th. You will only be contacted if a follow up is suggested. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Januzzi at jjanuzzi@stjudejaguars.org or call the school.

Item Needed

We are looking for donations of BABY WIPES (not disinfecting wipes). If you have any extra or would like to donate BABY WIPES we will glady accept them. Thank you!!

Conversation Connection

little prompts, big conversation

Each week will offer a conversation topic for parents and students, and if the students write a thoughtful response on the attached Google form they will earn a credit towards a dress down day.

5 credits equals a dress down for your student.

As Halloween approaches and nights become longer, and days become shorter it is an important time for us to reinforce good sleep and nutritional habits for our kids. Talking to kids about sleep and nutrition works best when you keep the conversation simple, positive, and focused on how their bodies feel rather than rules, restrictions, or weight.

How to Talk About Sleep

  • Connect sleep to their superpowers: Explain that sleep is when their brain "cleans up," sorts memories, and recharges their energy so they can run faster, play longer, and feel less grumpy.
  • Focus on daily goals by age: Share realistic targets in an encouraging way. Younger children (ages 6–12) generally need 9 to 12 hours of sleep, while teens need 8 to 10 hours.
  • Talk about the nighttime routine: Describe the wind-down as a special job for their body to transition from "go mode" to "slow mode." Mention how dark, quiet rooms and turning off screens help the brain get ready to rest.
  • Use neutral problem-solving: If they struggle to fall asleep, ask: "Is your brain still buzzing, or is something worrying you?" rather than just telling them to close their eyes.

How to Talk About Nutrition

  • Use neutral, non-judgmental language: Avoid labeling foods as "good," "bad," "junk," or "forbidden". Instead, talk about what different foods do for the body.
  • Link food to energy and strength: Explain that protein (like chicken, beans, or eggs) helps build strong muscles, colorful fruits and vegetables give the brain focus, and water acts like oil for an engine to keep them moving.
  • Explain the sleep-and-food connection: Help them notice how heavy, sugary, or caffeinated items close to bedtime can make their tummy ache or keep their brain awake, whereas a small, balanced snack (like yogurt and fruit or whole-grain toast) helps them sleep peacefully.
  • Keep it pressure-free: Remind them that trying a new food might take many small tastes, and everybody likes different things.
