SCENE (Seasoned Citizens Enrichment Events) invites you on a captivating bus tour of Jewish Newark with acclaimed author and historian Oscar Israelowitz on Wednesday, November 19th. Our bus will depart at 9:30 AM for a journey through Newark’s once-vibrant Jewish community, where a number of our own synagogues trace their roots.
Highlights will include:
*The Liberation Monument and Central NJ Railroad Terminal at Liberty State Park
*Newark’s former great synagogues (B’nai Jeshurun, B’nai Abraham, Oheb Shalom)
*Prince Street, Newark’s original Jewish neighborhood
*The YMHA, Beth Israel Hospital, and Weequahic High School
*Homes of Philip Roth and Jerry Lewis
*The last synagogue in Newark
Water, snacks and a box lunch (choice or wrap or salad) will be provided.

About Our Guide
Oscar Israelowitz has been documenting Jewish life around the world since the 1970s. A photographer, lecturer, and architect by training, he has authored more than 75 books including Guide to Jewish New York City, United States Jewish Travel Guide, and Guide to Jewish Europe. His work has been featured in museums such as Yeshiva University Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and his books can be found in libraries across North America and the National Library of Israel. In addition to writing and photography, Oscar has led countless tours—walking, bus, and even boat tours—introducing people from around the globe to the richness of Jewish history and heritage.
