 Know Your Department:
Modern Language Department
French 1 Students Engaged in a Communicative Pair Activity
The Modern Language Department at Carondelet prepares students to communicate authentically in French, Spanish, and American Sign Language. During their linguistic and cultural journey at CHS, students are immersed in a variety of authentic, culturally responsive communicative activities through which they hone their listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
Beyond the two years of language required for graduation, students are encouraged to continue their study for the third year (levels 3 and 3 honors) and the fourth year (level 4 and Advanced Placement - not available for ASL) and obtain the Seal of Biliteracy.
Outside the classroom, language students can participate in clubs such as the ASL club, the Spanish Honor Society, and the French Honor Society and engage in service projects such as Cartas con Amor (Letters with Heart) .
Most years, trips abroad offer students the opportunity to use their language skills in France and Spain, and immerse themselves in the cultures with peers and locals. We are currently planning our next trip abroad for the spring of 2021 - more details soon!
This year, our department is thrilled to begin a new virtual cultural exchange with students in Sénégal through the World Wise School initiative, a global connections program of the Peace Corps.
Introductions:  Our department is delighted to welcome a new French teacher who is teaching French 1, 2, and 4.  Kristy Parsons-McClain comes to Carondelet with 18 years of independent school experience in the East Bay. She is passionate about teaching French with storytelling and about creating a strong classroom community.

Congratulations to Carondelet's National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist & Commended Students

Kevin Cushing announced today that EmmaRose M. Lowery and Sophia G. Hermelin have been named commended students and Laura L. Bocek has been named a semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools across the country entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants, according to a National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release, and the nationwide pool of semifinalists includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/ NMSQT test in 2018.
To become a finalist, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received, according to the press release. Finalists will be notified in February 2020, and scholarship winners will be announced between April and July. From the 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level, according to the press release; of those, approximately half will win a National Merit Scholarship. Laura Bocek scores have placed her in the top 16,000 test takers in the nation and qualify her to advance to the next round. She will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
"Those being named Commended and Semi-Finalist students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource: recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Green Team ~ Stewards of Our Earth

This past Thursday students joined leaders from the Green Team in making Carondelet histor y by planting a garden! The first crop will feature kale and various herbs. In a short while, food should be ready for use in the Garaventa and for students to take home. The planter boxes between the Garaventa and the Academic Building were previously unused until the new garden repurposed them. Thank you to the Parent Association, Kevin Cushing, and Dean Elmore for supporting this important project.
The garden is one piece of a larger sustainability mission at Carondelet that responds to the Catholic Church's call for everyone to be a steward of the Earth. As youth climate activists spread awareness of the global need for change, Carondelet is taking grassroots steps to accomplish that mission.

STEM Trip to Switzerland and Germany 2020
Ms. Levesque and Mrs. Schooler are planning another STEM trip to Switzerland and Germany from April 2-10, 2020.
As the world becomes more connected, it is important to increase our global perspective and cultural awareness so we reflect a greater worldview to our students. The "Discovering STEM in Switzerland and Germany" program we chose begins in Lucerne and visits Freiburg, Munich, Zurich, Vauban, and Salzburg.
We will see how the Alps formed and the effects of glaciation on the geography of the Alpine lands. We'll learn about green technology and environmental advances within urban living of the plus-energy town of Vauban. We'll look at the research, technology and production processes of the Auto industry with a BMW Factory Tour and the salt mines where Salzburg gets its name. And we'll celebrate our learning with delicious local foods! If you are interested in the trip or have questions, please contact Mrs. Schooler at .
