Chair's Corner

Now that the primary election is over, we can focus on the vitally important municipal races taking place in our county. But let’s keep in mind that no state makes it harder to vote than Ohio. Some might make it just as hard, but none make it harder.

There are 24 states in the U.S. that have Automatic Voter Registration where every time you get a driver’s license or state ID you’re automatically registered. Ohio is not one of them.

There are 28 states that have pre-registration whereby 16- and 17-year-olds are able to sign up so that on their 18^th birthday, they’re already registered. Ohio is not one of them.

Also, no state, not one, has a longer period from when registration ends until Election Day…30 days.

And the greatest driver of increased turnout, same day registration, exists in 23 states, including that damned state north of us, but not in Ohio.

Ohio has been ruled for 30 years by Republicans. Not only do they not have common sense, but they continuously make our lives harder. Whether it’s getting a passport, buying groceries or voting. Nothing is easier because of them.

Ironically, in order to overcome these impediments, we must vote. The only way elected officials, in Cuyahoga County, Columbus, or Washington D.C., will listen is if we vote. Vote for your kids and grandkids. Vote for your street and neighborhood. Vote for your health care and vote for lower costs. But vote.

Please visit boe.cuyahogacounty.gov today to request your mail-in ballot. And if you will help us deliver vote-by-mail ballots to Clevelanders please signup on our website.
