A WORD FROM HILARY

Dear Friends,

I'm taking a breath in mid-September, thanking God for your partnership in the gospel (Phil 1:3, 5) as we join our hearts, minds and strength together in Christ's mission. We celebrate together the enriching Presbytery meeting held last month at First Presbyterian Church in Athens. How enjoyable to frame my report and all my comments in the form of prayer, and to worship and participate in the commissioning of Mielan Barnes as a Young Adult Volunteer to Peru. Thank you, Northeast Georgia Presbytery for your generosity in your support of Mielan!

New Synod Executive Joyce Lieberman delivered a powerful sermon and made an inspiring presentation on the state of the Synod. Thanks to First Presbyterian for handling an extra-large crowd and offering us gracious hospitality.  (On a connectional note, someone offered to jump off a fellow attendee and left their jumper cables. Please contact me or First Athens if they are yours.)

I am looking forward to our being together at First Presbyterian Church in Cornelia on Saturday October 21 for the Fall Stated Meeting of Northeast Georgia Presbytery. If you have a matter to be brought to Presbytery, please contact Stated Clerk Travis Adams or Moderator Ed Boland by September 25.

Finally please continue to pray for our sisters and brothers throughout the Synod of South Atlantic as they recover from Hurricane Irma. I have not heard of damage to any of our presbytery's church buildings and know only of loss of electricity and some downed limbs and trees. Thanks be to God!

May God continue to bless you and your ministries.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING HURRICANE IRMA AND HURRICANE HARVEY

Hurricane Irma - things you can do:

Grace and Peace to all of you. Thanks for giving me an update in your presbyteries.  I rejoice that you all made it through Irma and pray for your continuing leadership as our Presbyterian family steps up to assist those who have been most affected by this disaster.

Florida PDA (FLAPDAN) has its website up and running post Irma including how to register volunteer teams.

Go to the volunteer section and click on Hurricane Irma.  The immediate need is for teams willing to do tarping, debris removal and muck outs.  This is just for Florida recovery. There will probably also be needs in Savannah Presbytery as well and we'll keep you posted.

Presbyteries need to officially invite PDA in to work with them in a disaster (Georgia and South Carolina presbyteries, please note).  They also have initial grants available to presbyteries (see attached).  You don't have to have a formalized plan to request these funds.  Just the need.

As we continue to assess the damage done, let us continue to keep one another updated, to reach out to one another when there is a particular need that is made known, and pray for the recovery of hearts and spirits as we rebuild in places that are broken.

In Christ,
Rev. Joyce Lieberman, Executive & Stated Clerk
Synod of South Atlantic

Hurricane Harvey - things you can do:

Please join us in prayer for those who are suffering from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. To support PDA's emergency response and recovery efforts, gifts can be designated to DR000169-Harvey. You can also put together Gift of the Heart kits for survivors in the affected areas - hygiene kits and cleanup buckets are especially needed. For more information, go to pda.pcusa.org/page/kits
