Chair's Corner

In the wake of Labor Day, it’s important to note that Republicans have stripped nearly half a million federal workers of their union rights. Union jobs are essential to counter the overwhelming influence of corporations in America’s everyday life, and one of the biggest benefits union workers bring to the U.S. economy is a boost in workers’ pay overall. By cutting union jobs, wages for the rest of us will also flatline. Except for the wealthy elites.

By firing a member of the National Labor Relations Board, for the first time in history, Trump and Republicans have also made it harder to create or join a union. Now the NLRB only has 2 members out of a possible 5 and as a result can’t even meet because they don’t have enough board members. Joe Biden vastly enhanced the authority of this board while not coincidentally creating 16 million jobs during his presidency.

If you haven’t been personally hit by these attacks yet, or the skyrocketing costs brought about by ridiculous tariff increases, or the impending increases in health care costs, or by armed people invading your workplace, consider yourself lucky. Because you will be. Republicans aim not to keep things as they are but to increase the influence of two groups: the wealthy and corporate America.
