Lessons & Carols - Sunday, December 10, 9 a.m.

If you are attending this service, please be sure to grab a bulletin from one of the ushers.

Our Lessons and Carols service this year celebrates the Great "O" Antiphons, closely connected with the season of Advent, originating sometime in the eighth century and preserved via the Latin tongue, but translated here into English. They are the antiphons that traditionally accompanied the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23.

They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient Biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well.

Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The well-loved Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmauel” is based on these seven ancient prayers.

O Sapienta (Wisdom) of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge!

O Adonai (Leader) of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! Hebrew Names of God:  El Shaddai, God Almighty. This is a fascinating name because it is only used 7 times in the whole Bible. It was first used in the Book of Genesis, when God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as ‘El Shaddai’. The name Yahweh, the true God who saves, was not used until the book of Exodus when God revealed himself to Moses: Exodus 6:2-3 “God also said to Moses, ‘I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord [Yahweh] I did not make myself known to them”. So, what does El Shaddai mean? Why did he only appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as El Shaddai, and what can you and I take away from knowing that name? All the references to El Shaddai paint a picture of a God who is mighty to do as He says. What He says comes to pass. You only need to look in Genesis 1: ‘And God said, “let there be light, and there was light.’ He is Almighty. He has spoken.

Adonai means “master” or “Lord,” showing God has sovereignty over us. One of the most prominent names used for God in the Old Testament is the name Adonai. Adonai is a Hebrew word that translates as "Lord" of "Lord Master" from its derivation "sovereignty". People throughout the Old Testament also used the word Adonai when addressing humans who were master or lord over them.

O Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse’s) stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay!

O Clavis David (Key of David), opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!

O Oriens (Radiant Dawn), splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.

O Rex Gentium (King of all nations) and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

O Emmanuel, (God Among Us) our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God!

Reflection on this weekend's Scripture reading

The Psalm for this weekend is Psalm 85. This devotion is from “The One-year Book of Psalms.”

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,

    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;

but let them not turn back to folly.

                     Psalm 85:8

“Party Time in Jerusalem”

The time of captivity had ended for the Israelites, and many had returned to their homeland from Babylon. Nehemiah had masterminded the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, and it was time for a worship service.

Ezra the priest brought out the scroll of God’s law, and read it from early morning until noon. Apparently these words were new to many of the people.

Ezra praised the Lord, and the people shouted, “Amen!” as they lifted their hands and bowed to the ground. Then the assistant priests began circulating among the people, explaining what the law said. As the people recognized how far they had strayed from God’s ways, they began to weep.

But Nehemiah and Ezra tried to cheer up the people by telling them, “The joy of the Lord is your strength!” And then people ate, drank, and had fun (Nehemiah 8:1-12)

Psalm 85 also shows us a nation in transition. As in the days of Ezra, disaster was turning to success, and the people were praising God for it. Like the worshipers in Nehemiah 8, they recognized their past sins, but trusted God for forgiveness and looked forward to God’s favor in the days to come. Above all, they “listened carefully” to what God had said ---- that’s a prescription for revival in any nation.

December Mission of the Month

To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.

n December we raise up a vital Mission of the Month supporting the training of pastors for service in the North American Lutheran Churches. We have been blessed to have Ben Blobaum with us this year as a pastoral intern. Ben is a graduate of the North American Lutheran Seminary in Ambridge, PA.

Why is this important? The NALC is growing and the need for pastors trained for our Synod is crucial to us and congregations like ours in the NALC. Current pastors in other Synod traditions have received training in preparation for serving in NALC congregations; however, many of those pastors are nearing retirement.

The NALC has grown from 17 congregations at inception to over 500. Initially there was only one seminary in Ambridge, PA; however, due to growth and demand, the Lutheran Institute of Technology (ILT) in Brookings, SD also trains pastors for the NALC. The ILT is an online institute with undergraduate, graduate and seminary programs.

Please consider supporting these seminaries n their godly work. Click here to be directed to the NALS website for more information.

This Week's Reflection

from Martin Luther

Some here take the “land” in a single sense... to mean the blessed Virgin ... I believe that the word of the Holy Spirit is not thus to be limited to one of these three earths but refers to all three at once: the Virgin, mankind, and the literal earth. For in fact all three have been blessed at the same time...

The Personal Librarian

by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray

The remarkable, little-known story of Belle da Costa Greene, J. P. Morgan's personal librarian—who became one of the most powerful women in New York despite the dangerous secret she kept in order to make her dreams come true, from New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict and acclaimed author Victoria Christopher Murray.

In her twenties, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection.

But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle's complexion isn't dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white — her complexion is dark because she is African American.

The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths to which she must go—for the protection of her family and her legacy—to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives.

There are six books and a sign-up sheet located on the back counter in the media room.

Live Stream Attendance Link

If you watch our services via the Live Stream, please take a minute to let us know. There is now a link called "Online Worship Attendance" on the page where you access each week's service.

We appreciate you taking the time to complete this each week. It helps us know that our Live Stream is being viewed and by whom.

Thank you!

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.

Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.

The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The door that is closest to the office (NW corner) will be open during those hours.

Please check in with the office staff so we know you are in the building.

The office phone number is (262) 786-4010. Feel free to leave a message if you call after hours and we will contact you the next day.
