A Message From The President

Greetings. Thanks for opening this issue of The Register. This is one of the many ways we try to keep you informed about activities that are taking place at the Memorial as well as other items that relate to the Memorial or military women. We’ve definitely been engaged since our last issue and have included a recap of those events. I hope you will enjoy reading about them.

We’re looking forward to celebrating Women Veterans Recognition Day on June 12. While in-person tickets are sold out, we have created a livestream link so that everyone can join in this fun-filled celebration of "us."

June 25 is the 28th anniversary of the Memorial’s groundbreaking. It’s been fun reviewing pictures of the event. One can almost feel the sense of excitement of what was to come in every image. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Clark Construction members, the firm that dug that first hole and built our stunning Memorial. It was gratifying to hear of their pride in being a part of the Memorial project, especially when reminded that they changed the “face” of monumental Washington.

And, there are several other dates in June that give us the opportunity to pause and reflect upon military women’s service to the nation, such as D-day on June 6th, the Army’s 248th birthday on June 14, the launch of Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State on June 15, and the start of the Korean War on June 25.

Just a few days after we published the May edition of The Register, we were informed of the death of one of our most loyal charter members, a beloved Woman Marine and former founding Military Women’s Memorial Board Member, Theresa “Sue” Sousa. Sue served on the MWM board for 17 years. Affectionately known as “Our Founding Mother” by the Woman Marine Association, she served as its National President from 1974-76. Sue was 96 at the time of her death on May 5 of this year. She was a great American and patriot and will be sorely missed by many. The date for a service in Sue’s memory, which is planned for the Memorial, will be announced when available.

We hope you enjoy this edition of The Register. Don’t forget to put your flag out on June 14, Flag Day; and be sure to wish your dad – and every dad – a happy Father’s Day on June 18. (PS: Don’t forget to get your tickets for the best July 4th fireworks experience in DC. More info in this newsletter. Also your cabin is still available for the 2024 Women Veterans Cruise – it’s gonna be great!)

New in the Military Women's Memorial Collection

On the heels of Mother’s Day, the Military Women’s Memorial Collections team thanks the many daughters, sons, and loved ones who honor their mother’s legacy of service by donating their military service memorabilia to the Collection.

This month’s featured collection donation was submitted by Donna DeFreece, the daughter of Navy servicewoman Betty Lou Stanley Young, known to her fellow servicewomen as “Stanley.” According to her obituary, when she was only nine years old, Ms. Young’s family was stationed at Hickam Field during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The events of that day left a lasting impression that shaped her decision to enter the Navy in the 1950s.

During Ms. Young’s service, from 1951 – 1955, she was an orderly, a clerk, and a flight attendant—traveling the world, transporting troops from various locations such as the Azores, Germany, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Scotland. Ms. Young’s items donated to the Collection include home movies documenting these travels and bringing to life the fun had by “Stanley” and shipmates on base and in uniform. The film footage adds to the numerous audiovisual resources in the Collection that offer a firsthand glimpse of military women’s service experiences in a bygone era.

Other materials donated include Ms. Young’s portrait from boot camp and a recruiting comic book, “Judy Joins the WAVES,” enticing women with the benefits of military service. Both these items are pictured here.

Stories From The Register

Among June’s “special” days are June 12, the 75th anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act; and June 14, the US Army’s 248th birthday. Military Women’s Memorial member Annie Odom is the perfect poster child for both those dates. An academy grad, aviator and combat veteran, she lived the Army values, honored the valor and grit of her fellow soldiers, and embraced the Army’s legacy. The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act gave her a chance to serve. And, while it would have prohibited her from serving in combat and flying combat aircraft, it was a crack in the glass ceiling that let women get their foot in the door and pave the way for future generations of women like Annie Odom.

Thank You to our Corporate Donors, Partners, and Supporters!

A heartfelt thank you is extended to each of the Military Women’s Memorial partners! As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, MWM thanks you for your support of the Memorial's important work for the past 25 years!

MWM Volunteers

Our volunteers serve in a variety of roles in support of the Memorial. Always eager to help, our volunteers are a dedicated group. Every day, they roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to accomplish the mission.

The support for our women veterans and servicewomen knows no bounds. Kim Lefler, the spouse of a Vietnam veteran, drove from Travis City, MI, with her motorcycle to join the Military Women's Memorial at the Vietnam 50th Commemoration on the DC Mall in May. Kim's motorcycle is detailed with servicewomen’s images - one that might be very familiar to you if you have ever visited the Memorial and taken in the artwork in the lobby.

Kim's dedication to our military women is visible in all she does. We cannot thank Kim and her husband enough for making the long roundtrip from Michigan to spend a few days with us as we welcomed home and thanked our Vietnam Veterans. Learn more about Kim, her motorcycle, and her mission by clicking the ling below.

MWM Ambassadors

On Duty

MWM Ambassadors form our day-to-day grassroots connection to women veterans across the United States. They support MWM’s mission by encouraging military women, past and present, to register their story of service in the Memorial’s Register.

The month of May was a busy month for our MWM Ambassadors. From tables at conventions and bases, to veteran hikes and parades, to presenting Living Legend Proclamations, they are out in their communities in force, honoring our servicewomen and women veterans and spreading the word about their Memorial.

Pictured, left to right:

Florida Ambassador Amy Swinford participated in an inaugural Veterans hike at Weedon Island Preserve. She said it was a great success! If you visit Weedon Island Preserve, FL you will find an MWM placard, trifolds, and plastic Army women. Docent Bill is a USMC veteran and is very happy to be sharing information about the Memorial.

Northern VA Ambassador Kandi Mitchell and Washington, DC, Ambassador Carol Rhan joined forces to share the work of the Military Women's Memorial at the Veteran Resource Fair at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, VA.

Maine Ambassador Joy Asuncion presented our MWM Living Legend Proclamation to Helen Barry Siragusa, WWII/Korean War Navy Nurse, on her 100th Birthday. Joy said Helen is a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart and smile that lights up the sky.

Maine Ambassador Joy Asuncion honored World War II/Korean War Army Nurse Nancy Friis-Hansen, a proud MWM Charter Member, with an MWM Living Legend Proclamation. Nancy celebrated her 101st Birthday! Her sweet note to Joy says it all.

Illinois Ambassadors Jill Henry and Betty Yarbrough attended the 1st Women Veterans' Conference in Illinois. They registered 9 women veterans. Jill also participated in a panel.

SC Ambassadors Shelly Langston and Liz Litvin (pictured above) participated in the South Carolina DAV State Convention. SC Ambassador Barb Kucharczyk (pictured - right) joined Shelly and Liz at the convention.

MWM President Phyllis Wilson spent a few days in Western Washington State with Washington Ambassadors Darlene Iskra and Lenora Tanaka. Lenora drove Phyllis in her little red Corvette in the Bremerton Armed Forces Day Parade while Darlene set up an MWM info table. The trio attended the Navy League Gala together.

Tennessee Ambassador Debbie Gibbs had a great afternoon at the Meet and Greet for the Women Veterans of East Tennessee Meet and Greet. Debbie had a great day registering our women veterans with their Memorial.

Lt Col Doris Wagner, Deputy Chief Nurse at David Grant Medical Center, Travis AFB, CA, (and registered member of MWM) hosted California Ambassador Robin Diamond to set up an MWM table and sign up active duty women.

Ohio Ambassador Judy Pearson (left) was the guest speaker at a local Memorial Day parade. She spoke about MWM and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

MWM Women Veterans Recognition Day

Celebration

June 12th, 2023, 2PM - 5PM

We are excited to welcome members, guests, family and friends to the Military Women’s Memorial June 12, Women Veterans Recognition Day -- the day we honor and celebrate America’s military women. Join us for an afternoon of recognition, celebration, music, food, fun, and appreciation of the legions of women patriots who’ve served in America’s military. Celebrated each year on June 12 in recognition of the anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration, 2023 is particularly significant as it is the 75th anniversary of that groundbreaking legislation for America’s military women.

The celebration, which begins at 2:00 PM, will include a specially curated concert in recognition of the day by the world-class musicians from The US Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” We are honored to have the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, join us to pay tribute to America’s military women; as well as Maine Senator Susan Collins who will speak about the legacy of Senator Margaret Chase Smith, the prime advocate of the 1948 legislation. Senator Collins and CW5 Wilson will award the Senator Margaret Chase Smith Leadership Award to the next recipient. The VA’s Center for Women Veterans will be on hand to introduce the 2023 class of Women Veteran Trailblazers. And, we’ll have a special performance of “Military Women: Strength of America” by BMI Award-Winning Producer, Grammy Nominated Songwriter, and 3-Time Academy of Country Music Awards Nominee Stokes Nielson and singer, songwriter, and actress Alyssa Longoria. The song is the anthem written for and which debuted at our 25th anniversary celebration.

We're celebrating Women Veterans Recognition Day and 75 YEARS! Celebrated each year on June 12 at the Military Women's Memorial in recognition of the anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act signing, 2023 is particularly significant. It is the 75TH ANNIVERSARY of that groundbreaking legislation for America’s military women - the law granting women a permanent place and an opportunity for a career in the nation’s military.

Our mission at the Military Women's Memorial is to honor these women and tell their stories. While we honor our servicewomen every day, Women Veterans Recognition Day is a significant and special day for celebration. It is the culmination of their collective story and their journey – from the days when women disguised themselves as men to fight for their country, to the women who served even though they were not allowed to vote, and to today's women who prove, day in and day out, that women deserve a place in every role at every rank and in every military unit. Why? Because the women before them fought for the right to serve - each and every one of them has earned her seat at the table.

We truly are StongHER, BraveHER, BoldHER, TOGETHER!

75 Years of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act – A Seachange for Military Women

The 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, PL 625, was a major milestone in the history of women’s service to the nation. For the first time, women, other than nurses, would have a permanent place in America’s military. Prior to this, women were essentially “temporary help” during the crisis, then sent home when the trouble was over – no longer needed.

Read more this month about the provisions included in this groundbreaking legislation that impacted women's service for nearly seven decades.

We were honored to have Army Major General Michelle A. Schmidt stop by our Military Women's Memorial tent at the Vietnam War Commemoration on the DC Mall. She spent the day thanking all of our Vietnam Veterans, Veterans, and Servicemembers. MG Schmidt gave a wonderful shoutout to some of our women Veterans in our tent and to all women who have served. Thank you, MG Schmidt!

Operation Welcome Home

The 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

It was truly an honor for the Memorial to participate in the 50th Anniversary commemorative events marking the end of the Vietnam War, May 11-13, on the National Mall. The Memorial was one of scores of military and veteran organizations that set up in Camp Legacy’s tent city to “Welcome Home” America’s Vietnam veterans. The 3-day event brought many women veterans, family members and friends to the MWM tent.

While there were poignant moments during Register searches, it was a thrill for many women who found themselves – 50 years younger! During the event, we helped women register and told the MWM story to hundreds of guests. The life-size cutout of General Vaught was a great hit and many posed with “her” for a picture.

Phyllis Wilson delivered the introduction to the National’s salute to military nurses during the major league baseball game. Marilla Cushman moderated a panel of women veterans about service in Vietnam. Britta Granrud was part of a panel about preserving and donating Vietnam memorabilia. And, Donna Houle was instrumental in the day-long film festival of Gold Star Family film screenings.

To our delight, Kim Lefler, the spouse of a Vietnam veteran, brought her motorcycle, detailed with servicewomen’s images, all the way from Travis City, MI, and parked it at the MWM tent. It was another MWM hit, especially when rumors circulated that we were raffling it off!

We are grateful to the Commemorative Committee for giving us the opportunity to celebrate and tell the story of the some 265,000 women who served during the Vietnam era. You can learn more about the commemoration at https://www.vietnamwar50th.com/.

Bipartisan Women's Caucus Wreathlaying

Military Women's Memorial

May 23

MWM was honored to welcome the members of the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus to the Military Women’s Memorial for its 25th Caucus wreath laying ceremony. The annual event honors our fallen servicewomen as well as celebrates the women serving today by recognizing an outstanding officer or enlisted women from each service. In her welcoming remarks, MWM president Phyllis Wilson said, “Your efforts to be here today, as well as the efforts of caucus members for the past 24 ceremonies, speak volumes to the enormous respect and high regard you have for America’s servicewomen and women veterans — a pilgrimage of sorts to honor the courage, achievements and the sacrifice of the some 3 million women who have served.” The Caucus held its first wreath laying ceremony at MWM on March 31, 1998. Led by the late Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, it was in conjunction that year with Women’s History Month.

WE SALUTE HER

Washington Mystics

May 23, 7PM

Many thanks to WNBA’s Washington Mystics for honoring the service of military women with the May 23 “We Salute Her” Night. Four military women where honored at center court that night by an audience who demonstrated their gratitude with overwhelming applause and cheers. Honored were Army Captain Sara Higgins; Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant Samantha Vann; and Air National Guard Technical Sergeant Susanna Gyger. Also honored was Army Second Lieutenant Emily Perez who was killed in Iraq in 2006. Each was presented with a personalized Mystics jersey and an official game ball. Accepting on behalf of 2LT Perez was her big brother, Kevin. MWM board chair Jan Edmunds and MWM president Phyllis Wilson participated in the ceremony. MWM’s info table got plenty of traffic, where we talked about the Memorial and encouraged women to register. Our heartfelt thanks to the Mystics for honoring the service of military women with this “We Salute Her” night. We couldn’t be prouder than to stand with them on this national stage. It’s been great to introduce these military women who defend the nation to the superstars who defend the rim. Presenting sponsor for the event was MWM partner Leidos.

MWM Members, Donna Parry and COL KC Courtland, stopped by the MWM Booth at the Mystics game to say hello before the game. COL Courtland was selected to be the evening's honorary team captain for the Mystics.

MWM Memorial Day Ceremony

It was gratifying to have a full house at MWM’s 26th annual Memorial Day ceremony. Attendees had the privilege of receiving a powerful memorial tribute from Brenda “Sue” Fulton, the VA’s Assistant Secretary, Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs. And, our servicewomen didn’t disappoint either. Representing each of the services and providing moving remarks were CPT Sara Higgins, USA; Kim Brooks, USMC Veteran; CTISC Anjela Hoffman, USN; Capt Tiffany Sykes, USAF; CMSgt Cassaundra Buthorne, USSF; and LCDR April Killian, USCGR. With formal military honors provided by the Marine Corps and spiritual support by Chaplain (LCDR) Yonina Creditor from the Naval Academy, the program concluded with our traditional rose petal ceremony in memory of the fallen and the placing of wreaths by numerous patriotic and veteran organizations. A surprise attendee was 100-year-old, World War II Woman Marine Elizabeth Raica, who was visiting from New Jersey.

Mindful Memorial Day

For the 10th consecutive year, we were honored to host the Mindful Memorial Day Foundation and its Fallen Warrior Ribbon Memorial at the Military Women’s Memorial. This year, Foundation volunteers hung 7,025 ribbons which represented each of the men and women that have died serving our country, post 9/11. A powerful visual that spanned the length of our 220-foot exhibit gallery, the ribbons were a sobering reminder of the tremendous sacrifices of our nation’s servicemembers. Among the ribbons were 177 that represented servicewomen, everyone of whom are honored and memorialized in the MWM Hall of Honor and the Register. Visitors had the opportunity to select a ribbon and offer a mindful moment for the servicemember it represented. Our thanks to the Mindful Memorial Day Foundation for this annual observance that honors our fallen servicemembers and for making the Military Women’s Memorial its home.

Honor a Servicewoman with the Perfect Gift

Women Veterans Recognition Day, June 12th, is the perfect day to honor a servicewoman, past or present. There is no more appropriate way to recognize her service, contributions, and commitment to the nation than with an honorary square foot of her Memorial, the only national memorial that honors her service.

With your donation, she will become an honorary "owner" of the Memorial and receive an exclusive Military Women’s Memorial ‘Square Foot Society’ membership coin and certificate of recognition, which arrive neatly packed in an MWM box.

It is always a privilege and a pleasure to hear from our MWM community. Carrie Pierce responded to a recent social media post about our MWM Square Foot Society.

Carrie is not only a Square Foot Society member, but she is also a Charter Member of the Memorial.

The story does not end there. We searched our Register and found Carrie's Register profile. MSgt Carrie Lee Pierce, USAF Ret., has been part of MWM's history since the beginning - Charter Member, speaker, attendee at multiple events where she met Founding President Brig Gen Wilma Vaught, and she even held her retirement ceremony at MWM - a lifetime of service to our nation and support of her Memorial.

Thank you to Carrie and everyone who supports MWM. We are doing great things together as a community, and we are so proud and grateful each of you are part of our incredible village. We are Stronger TogetHER!
