Thank you for creating a community where every newborn is nourished with love and care.
So there we were, visiting a Mom and her newborn in her home just four days after delivery. The exhaustion was palpable; she had been nursing every 2-3 hours around the clock, and the toll was evident. We arrived with healthy meals, stocked her fridge and freezer, and provided much-needed support for breastfeeding. Dr. Ali took the opportunity to weigh and examine the baby, sending a detailed note to the medical team.
As we were about to leave, Mom sighed heavily and said, "Man, I have to take the baby to Truckee tomorrow to get weighed and have the bilirubin level checked...I really don't want to...I'm just so tired." Our hearts sank. Truckee was a daunting three-hour drive from her home, and the financial strain was evident. That gas money could easily be spent on food, and the thought of navigating those winding roads with spotty cellular connections was overwhelming.
She was alone, with no one to accompany her, and her sleep deprivation made her an unsafe driver. Her body ached from the birthing process, and sitting for that long would be uncomfortable for both her and her baby. The prospect of stopping on the side of the road in cold weather to feed the baby, praying she wouldn’t get a flat tire in a cellular dead zone, was terrifying.
In that moment of uncertainty, the "Doula & the Doc" stepped in. With expertise and compassion, Dr. Ali assessed the newborn's medical needs right there in the comfort of their home. She coordinated care with a local physician, ensuring the baby received the attention required without the exhausting trek to Truckee. The baby got an appointment the very next day!
Mom and baby are thriving, receiving the care they need locally. She didn’t have to make those dangerous drives anymore, and the relief on her face was priceless. This success story is a testament to the impact of your generous support.
Insurance companies are not readily reimbursing for this kind of care—though we are tirelessly advocating for reform—but thanks to you, families in Plumas and Sierra Counties now have access to essential services without the burden of long-distance travel. It’s the least we can do after losing our hospital's labor and delivery department, and it makes all the difference in the world! Thank you for standing with us as we support these families during their most vulnerable moments.
Thanks to your generous support, we have:
- Become a 501c3 tax-exempt non-profit organization
